Definitely go with a quad core in your desktop. Intel is smoking AMD right now performance wise. The lower end quads are cheap and have huge overclocking potential. I'm running a Q6600 2.4 GHz at 3.2 GHz with air cooling. It competes with some of the quad core extremes and the prices of those processors should be dropping substantially with i7 processors being released. If anyone is interested in building an overclocked system I'd be happy to provide any help/tips.
