Question for lightning photographers

On rare occasions, I hear a pronounced "TICK" a split second before the loud thunder

I have often heard a quick ( 1 second ) static buildup / release crackling type noise in nearby power lines just before an overhead or near strike when out shooting storms. Sometimes I can hear it in the surrounding air.
