Potential Chase Laptop

ASUS laptops are built with their own motherboards - quality stuff!

'click......................thump..........click'...

You're lucky to get that. Mine just died quietly. Both of my laptops have lost drives now. One was sitting on the mount; the other was most likely heat from setting a it on the passenger seat (before I nailed a 2x4 to a small sheet of plywood). So, now I have backup drives for both.

We've used ASUS motherboards for 15? years or so. I wouldn't buy anything else at this point. We've never had one DOA and we have five computers still running at a plumbing wholesaler for about eight years now. No reason to change that part of the equation.

Nice! I've been considering ASUS too. I'm not 100% committed to the E5400 but its at current where I'm at. :)

EDIT: Wow, I think I really like that ASUS!!! George, part of my thought's was by the time I was finished with the netbook it was darn near 900bux itself!! :)

Are there any matte screen + i7 processors out there? This is ridiculous. What are we to do when the latest matte screen laptops are 5+ years old lol.

At the beginning of the season I bought at Asus G51. I looked all over for a matte screen with what I wanted and did not find one. My system is a i7 720 with six gig memory 1gig video card. It screams and the glare screen was not as bad as I expected. My laptop is on a stand in a pickup and was very easy to see.

I was able to run Gibson Ridge 3 and 2 Analyst along with Barron's Threat net, streaming via Adobe Flash and GPS and Microsoft Streets and AIM. I also ran Pinnacle 14 to download and send back video. I ran all these at the same time. The only problem I had was early on with a driver conflict from my Garmin GPS that caused the blue screen of death. Never resolved that but started using a puck with Streets and Franson GPS gate and did not have any more issues.

My old system could never run all the programs that this Asus runs.........

Brand of chase laptop is a personal choice
Right now I am running a Lenovo T410 - the screen is just the right size to use in a car (I.E. not too big or small!) It has a SHDC card reader .
I do run Windows 7 64 bit as I need this for Premier Pro CS5 which is 64 bit only.
RE Solid State disks - I had a hard disk fail on me during 2009 mid chase - fortunately I had a spare disk with me with an image of all my software on . Since then I purchased a SSD and have NEVER looked back - the performance increase that they give is well worth the $200 cost IMO.

Thanks for the advice. I feel a little more comfortable about some of the new glossy screen laptops then. I'll be considering that laptop in the near future.

I've almost always used business-class laptops since they tend to be more robust and still come with matte screens. I'm currently using an HP EliteBook; I personally wouldn't touch any of the consumer crap at places like "Best Buy" etc.

I tend to purchase models that are being cleared out or in some cases returned from short-term leases.

I have a friend at work that could sell me a Toshiba N205 w/ 2gig of ram (10.1" screen) for pretty cheap.

I told him I'm not sure that it will handle the load I'd give it but wanna try it to see if it will do what I need it too.

Would it run GR2analyst alright?

It's so cheap to get a decent spec laptop, I'd say only if he's offering it up for $200 or less. I got a brand new dual core duo 4 gig ram win7 machine ~$550 from best buy (best deal back in Oct. when Win7 hit).
