Passive Antenna Adapter

I have an alltel Samsung R500(hue) That does not have an external antenna port.

I was searching a site and came upon a passive antenna adapter. They also have an inline adapter connected to an amplifier but I cannot afford that right now. So I was wondering if the passive adapter was worth getting. Is it just like an external antenna with out the amplifier?

For an an example http://www.wpsantennas.com/359914-passiveantennaadapter.aspx

Thanks for any help or other suggestions.

I have the very same phone, and I can assure you that there is an antenna port on the back - actually - there are two.

Unfortunately, you will first have to take off the plastic casing from the back of the phone(no big deal) that covers the battery. Once this is done, you will notice two sliver plugs/discs that are the same color just above the battery. Remove them both and toss them out. They are made of glued, silver colored paper - don't sweat it - it will be OK.
Once both plugs are removed, you can see both antenna ports.
One of these ports is to be used with a antenna - and the other works with a cell phone amp.

Here's the part where you have to get handy; you will need to locate and drill holes in the plastic cover (or 'skin' as it is called) so that you can access the antenna jacks.
The way I did it, was to use a thin piece of modeling clay across the inside of the plastic cover, put it back on the phone, press it gently against the back, removed it to reveal where I should center the two drill locations. You could also use tape or even chewing gum - just use enough in the right spots to locate where you need to drill.
Remove the battery cover plate and center the holes on the plate - then drill the battery cover plate - but make sure you don't keep it on the phone when drilling!!!
I used a countersinking bit after the holes were drilled to make them look concentric/round.
Check out 'Maximum Signal" if you want to get an antenna kit - good deals.
I don't always use the amp portion, but I always use the antenna when in my vehicle that comes with the kit/XLNT!!!

Too much work...just take a sheet of foil and carefully wrap it around your head being aware that you need to shape to antennas on oeach side of your head. Once you have done this, simply take a old piece of wire and tape it to the phone and then place the other end in your ear.

The extra bonus is that you now can now ALSO hear all phone calls within 30fteet of WHEREEVr you are standing..

Seems to woekr fooor meee and Eye haavee had no proplems sin ce then...

:)

The Hue does have an external antenna port . It is under the battery cover. We sell inductive adapters as well . They are about 60 - 70 percent as effective as a direct RF connection when placed directly over the interior antenna on the device.

The induction adapters work when the adapter is properly mounted. But only work with amplifiers not with just antenna. Placement of the adapter is key . It must be directly over the interior antenna on the device.

Ok, so this passive adapter, does it work or not? I have a motoq9c that has no antenna port.
Anyone have experience in using one?

A passive won't do much for reception, but for transmit - and that is feeble. They advertise them as having '2-4Db gain'. I sure would like to see an independent source of testing to verify this claim. What is wrong with using a real external antenna that is physically coupled to your phone? The difference of hooking up a wired antenna to a cell phone is quite visible on the bars/reception - sometimes as much as three bars more w/5Db of real antennna gain!

Could it be that lightning is the ulterior motive for using a passive? The last time this year when chasing in NE while being too close to lightning strikes, I starting yanking power cords and disconnecting anything external. Fortunately, nothing got ruined this time. While the 'Faraday's Cage' effect is the rule of protection while in your vehicle during severe lightning, having lead-ins from a HAM radio, scanner, and cell phone amp/ant certainly negates the safety factor considerably. One must also be leary of anything that is plugged into the cigarette lighter/pwr supp that leads back into the interior!

So what's a good antenna that will plug into the antenna jack of the HUE. Does any one have any links. I don't want an amp just the antenna and the adapter that plugs into the phone. Looking for 9dbi or higher

Any help

Check out Gordon Spencer's shop 'Maximum Signal". I must have asked Gordon a million questions and he was most patient and answered them all. He is confidant because he has good products at a great price. If you just want an antenna, He has that - too. The antenna will need an adapter to link the external antenna to your phone because there are different plug types for different phones. Gordon has those as well.

I don't always use the amp, but I always use the antenna in the mobile. It really gets out there - because the antenna actually gives some real Db gain all by itself. When I get too far away from cell towers - the cell amp is used. That way, I don't pull too much current from my power inverter. It's not that much, but if you have enough plugged in - it can be too much.

Don't be fooled by all these people quoting big numbers . Most of them are bull . If you want to go just antenna to start our 5DB magnetic mount is a great antenna and especailly for $30 . It is the one that also comes standard with the amplifier kit. A member of Escapees RV club did a head to head between Cyfre equipment and Wilson equipment ( Cyfre won of Course) but he was especially impressed with the 5 DB Magnetic mount antenna . Here is a link to the review

I believe the left port on the Hue is both send and receive so that is the one you would want to use.

I actually messed up the reception of my U520 after plugging in an external antenna. Everytime I unplug my antenna I would have no reception and I eventually I had to buy another phone because of it. My suggestion would to be get another phone just to use for chasing. You can switch your phone out on the Alltel my account page (I assume Alltel cause you have a Hue). I used a 5 Db antenna connected directly to the phone all last year and it worked great, but I am actively hunting a Wilson amp after I have seen some of the places people had connections and I didn't. I have tried the passive antennas as well, they dont work... at all.

Why would you hunt for Wilson Amplifier? Lots of members will attest to the Cyfre being superior and costing less money.Passive adapters only work with amplifiers and then the inductive adapter needs to placed directly over interior antenna on the device
