http://meted.ucar.edu is full of presentations (audio & visual) about many facets of forecasting... Severe weather, winter weather, aviation, etc. From basics to advanced, with quizzes along the way. I'd highly suggest that in addition to book learning, you visit that site often and join their updates list to be informed of new releases.

This was a great resource for me over the summer when I wasn't in school. I spent many, many, many hours taking the different courses and expanding my knowledge. The great thing is it is all free. You can retake the courses to freshen up whenever you need to for the upcoming season. I give them much credit for me doing so well in my meteorology standard courses....now only if they could make a resource like that for math and physics....
