A little after 4pm CDT today (6/1), a large cell that I'd been monitoring off and on from here in Huntsville arrived from south Tennessee. Though not severe warned at the time, the classic protocol played out in front of my porch: steady rain, then pea-sized hail gave way to pennies, which increased in intensity until nickels were bouncing off the street and vehicles.

As soon as the hail core (which was not showing on GRL3 at that time) passed, a very firm wind out of the southeast--60+mph estimated and directly opposed to outflow--thrashed and bent trees for about fifteen seconds. It then shifted back to general outflow direction (from the NW), but with nearly equal vigor for about 30 seconds before returning to the normal level.

When I came back indoors to check the GRL3, there it was--a nice TVS sitting close to my home, backed by SRV 2.4 degree tilt showing some notable shear. Interestingly, the .5 degree slice didn't show much near the surface, but it was here, perhaps lost in the 4-minute interval between updates. The TVS itself was listed as being at about 12Kft, but the circulation was visibly continuous to the ground. About two or three scans later, a nice yellow meso icon was in the same notch on the cell.

No gas, no miles, and no dramatic photos like those wonders I've been enjoying in the ST reports all month, but it was a nice delivery item.

You can't post about current weather events in here ;)

J/k hah ... my brother actually saw a so-called "supercell train" go right over his house with one putting him under the bear's cage as he sought shelter. He saw the winds do just about he same things, except the supercells were moving east and he didn't get the hail treat. At that time in the year I told him "you've seen more severe weather than I have by just sitting at home!"

I reported to the local NWS and just got an email back that they are currently sending two forecasters out to look at wind damage a couple blocks from me. I may have been on the fringe--will know more tomorrow.

Yep--it was cheap entertainment.
