Hello- Good time to experiment with new equipment.
Anyone get the Nikon D3 yet? I am waiting for one from Ritz Camera along with the 14-24mm lens.
"two weeks.... two weeks... two weeks....." they keep saying.
I'm hearing some good things on camera forums- especially about the ISOs of 6400 or 25600 with the special setting. The detail is incredible.
There's also a new slew of lenses coming out. Just in time for the holidays.
Anyone hear anything?

Hey Laura,
did you get the D3 yet ? Any news ? I am personally looking at the new D300. Can not justify the price difference knowing they'll be obsolete in a year or so. The reviews are amazing - its going to be a serious camera to work with. They are hitting stores just about now... many still on back order.

The only person I know who has one is Jim Reed (D3)...Nikon sent it to him to test out. I will ask him how he liked it.

Nope. I received the 24-70mm lens and the 12-24mm lens should be here tomorrow but not a peep about the D3.
They (big camera retailer) are receiving a big shipment on Jan 17th but I doubt I'll even be on that list. It had better get here by chase season. A ton of people are complaining about Nikon's distribution methods.
Everything's obsolete an hour after you buy it..... can't live that way! :)
We'll see how it goes. I hear good things about the D300 also.

Nikon has finally brought out the heavy hitters against Canon, who for all practical purposes, has been sitting pretty keen the last few years. Hopefully this will encourage more development on BOTH fronts. Better for all of us ;)

Laura,

You mentioned the 14-24 and the 12-24 lens. Which one did you get? The 12-24 DX lens or the 14-24mm? Just curious. As you have a D3 on order, I'd guess the 14-24? I plan on getting a 12-24mm this spring for my D80. Now that the trauma of switching from slide film to digital has passed, I can concentrate on making great pictures again!

Most of the improvements from the D80/D200 to the D300 have had to do with autofocus, live view, etc. From my understanding, the image quality improvements don't warrant the $1000 difference in price from a D80. The noise reduction software in camera has improved, but I think most of us shoot raw, and the D300 doesn't apply in camera noise reduction to RAW images anyways. (per Scott Kelby) I'll let you know when I get my D300, but I'm not expecting a big IQ jump. A DX sensor is still a DX sensor.

If you have enough money for a D3, go for it though, as the image quality jump from the D2x/D200/D80 to the D3 seems very significant.

Hi John- I had the Nikon 12-24mm lens and have been very happy with it. I used it about 70% of the time last year when I was chasing with my Fuji S3 body. I used a polarizing filter sometimes- depending on the sun.
I bought the 14-24mm lens this month for the FX properties that it and the D3 share. As soon as I get the damn D3 finally I can compare the two lenses. I had thoughts of selling the 12-24 lens but since the 14-24 lens cannot accept any filters (due to the convex element properties), I think I am going to keep it.
Welcome to the digital world. It's awesome.
Laura
