Folks, $1,200 is a smoking deal for a Canon 7D. Adam, if you want, you can easily sell it for $1,300 in one of the many photography forums, such as
www.photography-on-the.net ...and you could probably get $1,350 for it.
I've been shooting with a Canon 7D for almost a year now. It's a fantastic camera. Yes, the 5D MII is better for landscapes and storm-chasing (if you can afford it), but the 7D is much better for sports, wildlife, and believe me...it's no slouch when it comes to landscapes/storm-chasing! At any rate, if anyone is in the market for a 7D, $1,200 is a great deal and I would buy it without hesitation.
As for the EF-S 17-55 2.8 IS, I own that lens too, and it's fantastic! Do keep in mind that it's an EF-S lens, so it will only work on Canon's crop-body cameras, such as the 30D, 40D, 50D, 60D, 7D. (It will not work on full-frame bodies such as the 5D or 5D MII.) The glass is L-quality, but Canon will not the "L" stamp on an EF-S lens. It also lacks the weather-proofing that you'll find on many L lenses, but let me tell you, this is a great lens. The 17-55 focal length is great for a walk-around lens on a crop-body camera. Often times, this is the first lens I grab for general photography (and I own 8 lenses) and the 2.8 aperture along with IS (Image Stabilization) allows you to shoot in pretty low light. But when it comes to storm-scapes, the Canon EF-S 10-22 is the premier lens. 17mm on a crop-body is wide, but you'll want wider if you chase reasonably close to a storm. However, if you can only afford one lens, or if you already own the 10-22, then the 17-55 is definitely the way to go. And $800 is a phenomenal price...
Just my two cents,
Bryan
