My Chase Vehicle Setup

Danny N:
Thanks for the quick reply.
As of now, I am an NWS eSpotter; but the County EM strongly suggested that I get the HAM/Scanner so that I could net/listen w/Fire/EMS/Police.
Just trying to save the duckets for gas - if you know what I mean.
How much money are we talking about here - between new and used equipment?
Any other tips would/could be useful...

http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/5539 - Yaesu FT - 1802 is the one I would just program on your own spotter net for communication and I believe it is $200.

http://www.twowayradioonline.com/FT8800R.asp - Yaesu FT 8800R - is the dual band that I would have one side programmed on police and the other on fire. It IS kind of price-y but is worth it IMHO since instead of fiddling around trying to find a channel you want, you can use the mike to switch sides and monitor whatever it is you need to. http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/3427?page=2 is the review.

If you are on a budget or whatever, I would recommend the first 2M I posted. It does basically the same thing as the latter. With the latter being more "luxurious"

That's a interesting setup Michael. I've been thinking of something along those lines as well for my truck. Guess I best jump under the hood and look for some good places to mount brackets. One thing I'm concerned about though is if there are laws about restricting vision. Something I was also thinking about is using some .5" heavy density foam padding like at toolfoam.com sells to strap across the hood and roof. Might dissipate the energy of larger hail stones.

I don't have anything to add equipment wise, but check on local and state ordinances prohibiting the use of a mobile scanner. Living and traveling within Iowa you should be fine, but some states (i.e. Indiana, New York and Kentucky) have negative attitudes towards mobile scanners and specifically legislate against them. Most of these laws do exempt ham radio operators.

I now see the vehicle in which I would choose to try and ride out the apocalypse.

Kansas law for obstructed windshield...Just for your info. I have seen severa vehicles both while on duty and while chasing that have the windshield protectors. So far I have not run across any that I felt violated the staute in my opinion. The problem is that the statute is written broadly enough that different officers may not share my opinion. Here is the wording of that staute.

K.S.A. 8-1741. Windshields and windows; damaged windshields prohibited; obstruction or impairment prohibited; wipers. (a) No person shall drive any motor vehicle with any sign, poster or other nontransparent material upon the front windshield, side wings or side or rear windows of such vehicle which substantially obstructs, obscures or impairs the driver's clear view of the highway or any intersecting highway.

(b) No person shall drive any motor vehicle with a damaged front windshield or side or rear windows which substantially obstructs the driver's clear view of the highway or any intersecting highway.

(c) The windshield on every motor vehicle shall be equipped with a device for cleaning rain, snow or other moisture from the windshield, which device shall be so constructed as to be controlled or operated by the driver of the vehicle.

(d) Every windshield wiper upon a motor vehicle shall be maintained in good working order.

History: L. 1974, ch. 33, § 8-1741; L. 1993, ch. 37, § 1; July 1.
