Mobile hotspot?

Hi all, I saw a very interesting stuff realized by Sprint: what do you think about this "mobile hotspot" with 4G for chasing?

Not ideal for chasing . 4G at this time is only available in urban areas and unit has no external antenna port to hook an antenna or amplifier in signal challenged area.

Andrea, there are other devices that will create a mobile hotspot for you like the MBR and Kyocera cradlepoint routers. They take a variety of devices as the input source (datacards and tethered phones), and thus can work on a variety of different networks. They are a little larger and a little more expensive but the features they provide like managing your connection for you with multiple devices, is more than worth it.

Is it possible to use your laptop as a mobile hot spot when using a tethered phone or something like that? I think it's called "Adhoc" mode on your wireless card?

Yes you can James, it's pretty simple. In XP, once the cell connection has been created, disconnect, go into Network Connections and find the icon for the cellular connection. Right click on it and click properties, click on the farthest tab on the right (Sharing) and check the box that says "Allow other computers to access the internet through this computer".

Once you reconnect to your cellular connection, you can create an Ad-Hoc wifi connection and anybody who connects to that wireless network will have internet connectivity through your air card.

In Win 7 the process is the same, but you'll have to open your Network & Sharing Center from Control Panel, on the left side click on Change Adapter Settings. Find your cellular connection and the steps from there are the same.

Actually I thought that 4G network was more spread on the territory. Too bad, so far, it is only for the biggest cities, so it is not useful for chasing.
