Microsoft Streets and Trips Discontinued

Awesome, thanks Michael. Also, do you only load or unload by the state you need?

Honestly I was just looking into today whether it was possible to get country-road-level detail on a larger US map..... But single state at a time right now. Does such a US placefile exist? seems like it would be measured in gigs.

I use Delorme's Street Atlas USA. I haven't upgraded since 2011. Since I now run Windows 8 on the computer. The GPS puck I have isn't ideal have to go through a few steps to get the thing to work for 8. I was going to see what S&T were all about this year but seeing they are discontinuing the software, why switch. Software is is 40 bucks and then they have a higher option with a new GPS puck that runs with Windows 8 that is 50 bucks. Not bad to bad of a buy.

I'll be sticking with my most recent version of S & T. I don't think there will be that many new roads built in and around Tinytown, USA that would require immediate upgraded software. There may be a need for current road data around some metro areas where I think Google maps would suffice.

I was thinking about this the other day.. trying to find an offline alternative. I stumbled upon 'MapSphere' which seems to be a fairly well written piece of software and supposedly supports offline maps, still working on how to figure that out. As for now I'll be working on the GR3 ShapeFiles I found on http://redteamwx.com/grlevelx.html. As for performance, I'm using a Dell XFR XT2 'tablet' with 1.6GHz Core 2 Duo and 3GB of ram which allows GR3 to run acceptably smooth with these enabled. I get probably 5FPS when zoomed out and moving around, which is fine and when zoomed into a county level I see approximately 20FPS which is realistically where I'll be.

I run StreetAtlas - version 2004 up until v 2011 a couple of years ago. The only times I run into outdated maps is with the new bypasses being built around some of the towns (when SA has me driving through a field). A little confusing at times, but no major problem. I rely heavily on the GPS logging of SA for chase documentation and recordkeeping. Those can be overlaid onto an up-to-date Google map later.

If the GR developer ever made a plugin that overlaid radar onto the StreetAtlas map, I'd buy it in a heartbeat!

StreetAtlas is really the way to go. I usually buy the update about every 3rd year or so. The new quick search feature for points of interest is nice for finding food and hotels. There's no way I would go online-only for mapping at this point.

For those of you running Windows 8.1, I found an interesting app in the Store called "Maps Pro"

http://apps.microsoft.com/windows/en-us/app/maps-pro/afe19081-5161-4399-8850-06c9a858a072

They're touting it as the replacement for S&T.

Reviews are mixed. But, for the little I've played with it, it may become a viable option. Especially those
considering a tablet, If I can work it with my fat fingers, It has possibilities.
Well, I honestly thought I'd like the whole Road Shapefile thing in GR3 the best, but it turns out, I don't. With the convenience of the touch screen I can easily swipe back in forth between GR3 and either Map Pro or Street Atlas (which I’d like to also run). Plus when you're in GPS mode, your position shows up anyway... I too have a CD/license for Streets & Trips, but it’s installed on my laptop, and I don’t have an external drive to try and remove it and load unto my tablet. Oh well.
I did run into the issue that Nick Nolte talks about here (http://www.nicknoltewx.com/blog/2013/03/15/gps-devices-in-windows-8-apps/) with the driver for the Metro Maps (Maps Pro) on the Surface Pro 3. You absolutely have to run this software found here: http://www.turboirc.com/gps7/ in order for it to work with GPSGate. Nick said when he got it, it was free. It’s now $10.99 for the download payable by Paypal.

It took me a few minutes to tinker with the set up (and a few texts back and forth with Nick), but ultimately this solution fixes the issues for them and I believe for Street Atlas as well. I’ll let y’all know what I find out. I thank Nick for this post on his blog. Check it out, or for the sake of time, if anyone needs to be walked through it, feel free to give me a shout.

I use Delorme Topo North America to display two different zoom levels side-by-side. And I cross-check and view the roads around a cell using OpenStreetMap shapefiles in GR3.

Bringing this topic back to the surface I;m after some expert help - have new laptop for the 2020 season. Loaded S&T 2010 off CD successfully but the update to 2013 I downloaded way back whenever and of course that's not availabe. Have a copy of the entire folder of 2013 version copied from the old laptop but can't work out how to be able to load that. Any clever ideas? A million TIA!!!
