Geez!

Glad I only have about 1" of snow to report attm. And that's more than I want!

BTW, what kind of wind are you guys getting up there?

-George

I'm right on the border of Shelby Township, Rochester, and Troy (technically I live in Rochester, but if I cross the road going south, I am in Troy, and if I cross the road going east, I am in Shelby). I would definately say there is a solid 12-14 inches across that three-city region. Winds have not been too bad, but up around 35-40MPH gusts... When it does blow though, visibility quickly drops. Snow has been drifting up towards 2 feet...

Still, nothing like what the northeast is gonna get! I'm still jealous!

Information only pertains to the NWS Grand Rapids CWA.
Highest wind gusts were only 36 mph at NWS Grand Rapids office,
32 mph in Lansing and Muskegon MIchigan.

WIND GUSTS HAVE NOT BEEN
EVEN CLOSE TO WHAT BUFKIT SUGGESTED... APPARENTLY BECAUSE THE MIXED
LAYER HAS NOT BEEN AS DEEP AS THE FCST SOUNDINGS IMPLIED. COULD
STILL SEE SOME GUSTS TO 30/35 MPH EARLY... BUT WINDS SHOULD DECREASE
CONSIDERABLY BY LATER TONIGHT. ACTUALLY THE DRY NORTH FLOW SHOULD
REALLY HELP CLEAR THE SKIES OUT AND COULD ALLOW ENOUGH DECOUPLING OF
THE BOUNDARY LAYER FOR WINDS TO GO LIGHT AFTER MIDNIGHT

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE GRAND RAPIDS MI
1218 PM EST SAT JAN 22 2005

STRONGER WIND GUSTS HAVE NOT YET DEVELOPED AND LATEST RUC WIND GUST
PROG DOES NOT SHOW NEARLY THE SPEEDS THAT BUFKIT MIXING HEIGHT
METHOD INDICATES. THINK THAT EVEN IF THE STRONGER WIND GUSTS NEAR 40
KTS DO DEVELOP THIS AFTERNOON... THE HIGHER GUSTS WILL BE FAIRLY
BRIEF IN DURATION AND IT WILL BE HARD TO SUSTAIN FREQUENT 1/4 MI
VISBYS IN BLOWING SNOW. THEREFORE WILL NOT UPGRADE TO BLIZZARD
WARNING ATTM BUT HAVE HIGHLIGHTED OCCASIONAL WHITEOUTS AND THREE
FOOT DRIFTS IN THE WINTER STORM WARNING.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE GRAND RAPIDS MI
400 AM EST SAT JAN 22 2005

WINDS WILL REALLY INCREASE LATE
MORNING AND THIS AFTERNOON AS THE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM MOVES TO
AROUND CMH BY 18Z AND THE STRENGTHENING SFC HIGH BUILDS INTO THE
DAKOTAS. A BUFKIT TIME HEIGHT X-SECTION OF CONTOURED WIND SPEED WITH
HEIGHT AND MIXING LAYER HEIGHTS SUGGESTS WE COULD EASILY GET SOME 40
MPH WIND GUSTS FROM AROUND NOON THROUGH 6 PM. IN FACT A FEW GUSTS TO
NEAR 45 MPH CAN'T BE RULED OUT. THIS COMBINED WITH ALL THIS NEW SNOW
AND SNOW COVER ALONG WITH VERY COLD TEMPS WILL RESULT IN EXTENSIVE
BLOWING AND DRIFTING OF SNOW AND NEAR BLIZZARD CONDITIONS AT TIMES.
WE EVEN CONSIDERED BLIZZARD WARNING HEADLINES. HOWEVER, I JUST DON'T
FEEL WE'LL HAVE WIDESPREAD 1/4 MILE VISBYS FOR 3 HRS OR MORE THIS
AFTN IN SNOW/BLOWING SNOW, THOUGH THE 35 MPH GUSTS WILL BE EASILY
ATTAINED. DAY SHIFT WILL HAVE TO MONITOR GUSTS AND VISBYS IN SN/BLSN
VERY CAREFULLY FOR POTENTIAL BLIZZARD WARNING UPGRADE.

well, so far around 10-11 inches with more falling at a fast rate. the lake effect machine is working overtime today. Winds have been at or near 40mph gusting all day and port hope on the lake huron shoreline has had gusts near 50mph. Blizzard warning is in effect til 4 am with storm totals near the lake up to 18 inches.
