I was thinking the other day about the furthest a thunderstorm has ever lasted. Of course there are Long Tracked tornadoes but I am looking to find if anyone knows about a Thunderstorm from start to finish, severe or not, How Far the longest you know has stayed Active with lightning. Has there ever been a Thunderstorm that developed from lets say the very bottom of Texas and moved North or Northeast well into Canada and was still active? Or a storm that crossed at least 5-6 state borders or lasted over 24 hours?

Would be cool to hear any stories about this and also links to such events.

The longest supercell on record... 3-12-2006... It tracked from northeast OK/southeast KS and traversed all the way into central Michigan -- 800 miles away [lasting over 17 hours]. I chased it from central Missouri to northeast of Springfield, where it produced an (E)F2 tornado. As it moved northeast, it's inflow layer became elevated in nature as nocturnal cooling set-in and wasn't able to ingest the rich low-level SRH near the surface. However, it remained severe and kept supercellular characteristics all the way into Jackson county in MI.

There has been some super derecho's that have lasted over 24 hours I think but I have never heard of a single thunderstorm lasting that long.

Thanks Nick, and its from last year too. Thats one heck of a long track.

A derecho lasting more than 24 hours? Is there any info on this. I would imagine major damage since Derecho's have severe winds 65+mph. Wow. I'll try to find some more articles and link them here.

In 1995 4 Derecho's, one right after another would move across parts of the US. Three of them would move across nearly the same area. I call them Super Derecho's because a arguement on ST last year I think it was showed me how pathetic some Derechos can be compared to the monsters like the one described below. (The weaker ones are still bad) Just a Example taken from the NWS site link posted in this thread:

"The Right Turn Derecho" traveled 1400 miles in 27 hours at an average speed of 52 mph. Many millions of 1995 dollars worth of damage was done, millions of trees were destroyed, 7 people were killed and nearly three dozen were injured.

The most recent long tracked supercell was on 5/10/08. It had numerous tornados that killed several people in NE Oklahoma and SW Mossourri. (Picher, OK and Newton Co., MO) It tracked from Srn Kansas all the way to the Atlantic coast in Ern Georgia producing severe weather and a few tornadoes along the way. It lasted approx. 16 hours.

If you look at the SPC reports you can follow hail, wind, and tornado reports the entire way.

That was the first thought I had. I've got a picture of it not long after it developed in Oklahoma...

my first "real" chase. forecasting and setting up. followed it up 44 in NE OK and let the wall cloud come right over us in Big Cabin, OK. beautiful storm. we watched it go on into KS/MO for 2 hours just watching the lightning. easily the best lightning show i have ever seen.
