I'm looking for a friend, who travels a lot, and would like to have something without having to mess with SAME codes on a weather radio. I personally have no experience with Android based phones, and therefor don't know of any trust worthy apps to stream weather radio with. Thanks for any suggestions.

You could try the Scanner Radio app for Android , you can search by genre and it has a weather category with some weather radio available for different states. They make updates to the app often. If you have the phone's gps on, you can also tell the app to search radio sources available near you. There is a free version, which I have, but you can also get a pro version.

I have the Pro version of this app. It works very well. May have to play with some the settings to keep alerts from constantly going off every 3 minutes when it checks. The Pro version also has a location tracking feature that will automatically look for surrounding alerts based on gps.

I have an inexpensive handheld wx radio from radio shack. It has a "travel mode" and always listens to the strongest available channel and runs on batteries but also has a power input. It will have fewer "dead spots" than a device that requires a solid cellular data connection and is much more reliable than an iffy web-based app. You don't need to mess with the SAME codes either if you're in "travel mode". It will warn with loud audible when any warnings come across prompting you to push a button to un-silence the radio.

My only issue with this radio is it can be difficult to hear when in a hard rain or hail situation but it is better than any cell phone solution for warnings. Anything that can be utilized that can reduce driver distraction and requires less operator attention is a good thing for a chaser, especially a single chaser.

A decent radar app for PC or mac will also place warnings on the map fairly quickly but I personally prefer to rely on noaa wx radio warning because they are instant and I can "listen" to these as I'm driving as opposed to have to "read or visualize". But when stopped, I like to see the warn areas on my notebook app. to verify.

WDT will be releasing a version of the imap mobile weather radio for the Android soon. We're still working on the push notification component, but the rest of the app is functional. I've got a copy of the beta and it runs pretty well on my Droid 4. Shouldn't be too long now before it is released.
