A Friend of mine from work sent me this picture of tornadoes in last weekend's outbreak, just west of Yankton, South Dakota. I thought you might want to see this.I did not take this picture. Unfortunately, I was stuck at work this day and was not able to chase - or I certainly would have bagged this as well. This is a very interesting shot from a meteorological point of view. The photographer is unknown. I am unclear if the friend from work shot this picture or received them from another source as I did not ask.

Not quite, but they are from the same storm and are genuine, because the image on the NOAA link, was taken a little earlier, than the one Jeff posted...

The one Jeff posted, shows that the middle funnel has touched down, as it has extended closer to the ground, and it had a debris swirl underneath :)

This one in the link is shows the same image, except slightly earlier, as the middle funnel hasn't extended as close to the ground and there is no debris swirl under it :)

No worries buddy :), I thought they were the same pic also, untill I noticed that debris swirl in the pic the pic Jeff posted :) lol, and then taking a closer look at them both, I realized the other differences between them, and so, I kinda goofed up a little too :) lol

I was sent 6 different photos of this same event, taken a few minutes apart of each other. The one I posted was the most meteorologically interesting.

Bill was on the same storm, I believe. Lots of multiple vortex action, sattelites and cyclic regeneration. Of course the same was true for the storms down in Kansas too. The only difference was the contrast was tougher. I think that storm SW of St. John on May 5 had at least 3 tornadoes going on at once (occluded, occluded sattelite and cyclic). Further in South Dakota, I think the residents of Spencer SD (who had their own mini-Greensburg tradgedy) got a little scare from a nearby large tornado.

Actually, after messing with the Brightness and Contrast levels on the image from the NWS site, you CAN see a debris cloud for the middle funnel.

FWIW, the astronomy trick of averting your vision does the trick on the (regular) photo as well. (in fact, I find that this can help bring out contrast in storm structure when it's hard to make out)

I have some damage photos from this storm. The small funnel in the middle of the picture touched down nearly 1/4 mile from my grandparents home NW of Crofton. The larger much more significant tornado struck the Weigand Marina on the Nebraska side of the lake and was rated ef-2. I will post up some damage photos later this evening, just have to convert them from raw to jpeg. The damage path looked to be around 1/2 mile wide near the marina with some pretty significant damage spread around the area.

Yeah, I immediately saw it on the original photo, too. C'mon, you guys. You gotta have that EYE for the tornadoes. How many have you missed in the field? :p

Well i can see where the pic came from i have a full email of the pics, with that yankton sd title, they supposably came from a local fireman, who was out spotting..( Tim Binder ) in this email is 19pics all digital, they look pretty legitimate, but they might be a chasers pics or something also" theres no name, just a time stamp on the bottom left of each pic
