INSPEED MAG MOUNT ANEMOMETER!

i noticed the metel isnt that strong. so far my cups havent broke yet but i just emailed him about stronger cups that he came up with.

I had one of these anemometers on my car's roof during the early part of the 2005 hurricane season. During hurricane Dennis I had a gust to 83mph near Key West, with several other gusts above 70mph. During my first Katrina chase in Pompano Beach and Ft.Laurderdale I had gusts to 50mph before something hit and broke the cups before the highest winds arrived.
I did notice during Dennis a loud humming sound coming from the the roof mount which was probably the bearings going bad.

heres a funny one for ya guys... find a skywarn hard helmet take the 2 magnets off the inspeed bolt it to the top of the hard hat. mount the display on ur belt go near a storm and what do u have?? a anemometer hard hat, sold in stores near you:D

I used this product all of last chase season.

I too have wondered about the low profile affecting the reading, but found it to be pretty accurate to my current driving speed, although it took me forever to figure out how to get the display unit to read MPH.

I had the problem with the cups breaking off at first and I gave up on it, till I was alerted they designed a stronger cup [thanks to Bill Doms] I was sent 2 of them for free, again Mr. Lorenzo is very understanding and wants to make sure his customers are happy. So far this new cup has lasted...well see how they hold up in '08

Here it is pictured on my roof in case anyone isn't familiar with it. This is in the OK panhandle on 4-21-07

A word of caution, replacing the cups is a true test of ones patience, it requires the removal and replacement of a really small c-clip...I cant even begin to describe the frustrations with that thing!

I would recommend it, they're small and affordable and a good way to start, and until someone can proove the readings are way off, I have no reason to question the accuracy.

I had to replace the cups a couple of times, but that was due to the magnet coming off the roof when I truck passed me on a two-lane road on a windy day and the anemometer slammed into the side of my car.. After I replaced the cups, I changed out the magnets and put a heavy-duty magnet on it that came with K40 CB antenna I got back in the day.

Zero problems since then.

That's the same reason the cups on mine broke last summer, but I wasn't getting passed by any vehicle. It was just another windy day here on the highway, and the car was moving, also.

Peak reading on the display was 161 kph, so the magnets didn't do too badly.

Will just be putting it up for active chase mode, in the future.

Just curious; has anybody found any value to have one of these units on there when you're moving? I can't see the data being of much use unless you're stopped somewhere. I've been thinking about getting one but my hand-held unit has worked well enough for my needs so far.

I'll look forward to seeing how the new ultrasonic models work out in this application; particularly if you have the means to account for vehicle speed, wind vector correction etc.

Just curious, was that 45 mph winds on top of the 70 mph winds driving? An aggregate 115 mph possible there. Got forbid you pass a truck. LOL I had my Ventshades over my window ripped off coming home in high winds from that last Oct. chase in OK.

Nah, I never reached winds of that speed. In fact, the surface winds likely never reached 45 mph even as they were fairly calm conditions, so the top speed from driving was likely only 70 mph or so, as I was mostly on backroads during the time as well.
