i was just curious about the mag mount, i have it for my truck and i love it, the 1 thing i dont get is when its on the roof the cups are about 5 inches from the roof in the air, how does it get accurate wind speeds from being so low to the roof?? ive always had that go through my mind. any answers??

Immm... I had a brand new one that failed during Typhoon Krosa - the bearing just seemed to give up and it just vibrated instead of spinning at any thing over 20 mph.

I might of had a duff one - but it is very hard for me to get it swapped out from here in the UK - still when I tested it against my GPS in the car id seemed to be OK in that it was +- 5%

I just got one too.. Im not sure either. But I do like the low profile. I have the problem with Off Road Lights in front, so if im faced into the wind, it may be getting bad readings.

I don't know, maybe it was more of a cosmetic thing, but I like it.

If you have a problem with a InSpeed product, I would contact them. Lorenzo is very good at making sure his customers are happy. This summer he redesigned the bearing mechanism and reinforced the spinners. We had a issue with the bearing, we met him at Hamvention this year and he replaced it on the spot, no questions ask.

no i dont have a problem with anything, i just didnt know how good it was saying its low profile. no problems yet with the bearings. i do notice though when i have my WX lab on the truck on a windy day the speed is a little more then the inspeed.

Based on the wind readings while in motion, the vehicle slipstream effect is almost negligible in skewing the accuracy in practice. I used the unit on both my Ranger and my Freestyle, and the readout always matched the speedometer with maybe an occasional +-1 or 2 mph deviation.

I had one in 2006 that lasted all of one chase before one of the cups broke off. It probably got hit by a piece of debris on the road or something, unless mine was so poorly made that the 45 mph winds it experienced that day destroyed it. I never bothered fixing it or replacing it.

I was about to order one of these so I'm glad someone brought up this topic. Do you guys leave your Insight units mounted to the roof while driving at all times, or do you just put it up once stopped at a spot location?

Well personally, I leave mine up, but I tie the cups so they dont spin and I put them in a Ferris Wheel Type position. I like the simplicity of leaving them up.

Ours comes down. But, once storm season is on, its up the entire time.

Andrew, go to the Inspeed website and send an email to Lorenzo, he did redesign the cups to be more durable. since he replaced ours last season, we have had no probs!

Just curious, was that 45 mph winds on top of the 70 mph winds driving? An aggregate 115 mph possible there. Got forbid you pass a truck. LOL I had my Ventshades over my window ripped off coming home in high winds from that last Oct. chase in OK.

i leave mine off, the only time i put it up is when storms come or if im just gona take a look at winds on a sunny day. how much are the new cups? i havent been to his website in a while. ive had them on the midcape highway like a interstate but only having 2 lanes here on capecod. and ive done 90 mph and it reads about the same but the cups havent torn off which is a good sign i guess:D

I've had mixed success with these, they work really well then the cups aren't flying off. All in all I had to replace the cups a grand total of 10 times before the actual mast that anemometer is held to broke on me due to a defect in the metal. The guys at inspeed were very nice and gave me a free set of replacement cups each time they broke and it seemed like I was losing one per chase so if you do leave them up make sure you shield them when you are not using them so that they do not self destruct. I had mine for about 2-3 months before the mast snapped and I went back to my kestrel. The inspeed is a great product.... when it isn't blowing its self apart.

((but I will give them kudos for all the free cups they sent in all they gave me 12 so I still have 2 I haven't used. This is a fun toy but I wouldn't recommend it untill they do something to fix the problem of them breaking apart.))
