I have a Ram Mount and I love it. I have used several of those those cheap ebay ones with the plexiglass and imo the Ram Mount blows them out of the water!

mine's not plexiglass. mine is all tube aluminum with steel levers that lock down, the tray that the laptop sits on is plastic, but I added a velcro strap for a little extra insurance. very rugged, but well built, and very stable.

I've heard good things about the Ram Mounts though, I just didn't have $250 to plop down.

for $59 though I can't complain about my "cheap ebay" one. ;) it stays in position, doesn't move on me, or sway, or come flying at me when I gotta take evasive maneuvers.

Andrew you mind linking to the eBay auction you found that on? Or something similar? I just want to check that thing out.. I'm pretty well stuck going for RAM. My truck will be used for first response shortly so a RAM for me is just about the only way to go. Just curious :p

I just bought myself a Ram mount for $200 and I LOVE it!!! Before i got the ram, i was using a mount from some site named http://www.mobilelaptopmount.com. it worked fine the first few months but in the last month it had just become more of a hindrance than anything. A Ram mount is definitely worth the investment! Heres a pic of my setup after I installed the Ram just about a week ago.

looks like he's upped his prices a little bit, but I got hand it to them...for the $60 i paid, pretty decent laptop mount, as stated before, I got no gripes or complaints about it.

it's pretty rugged, pretty sturdy, and i can change the tilt, swivel, heighth, and everything. everything is adjustable, and everything locks down good.

I would agree that using the seat bolts will certainly help for stability. Joey, your mount looks somewhat similar to mine. I inherited mine from a another ST member, and is a jotto desk tray, so it tilts and swivels, but since the rest is other metal, it's a fixed height. I did not want to drill into my car, but the floor is not level on the inside of the passenger seat, so I came up with a way to use the seat bolts.

I bought new bolts for the seats that were longer, fastened a piece of pressure treated wood as an anchor, leveled out the area where the base plate sits, and use screws and wing nuts to fasten the base plate/mount to the wood. The front passenger seat must be all the way back for mine, and it does take up a bit of leg space on the passenger seat, but I can still accommodate a passenger. Best part is that I can install/uninstall the mount in less than 10 minutes with no tools, and once you move the seat forward, can't even tell the wood base is there.

Yeah, it's a mickey mouse solution, and a jotto or RAM would be ideal, but for now the price is right and it get's the job done without a problem of the mount being unstable or the seat being loose.

Patrick....paint the thing up black, with thick coats, and that should make it look one step closer to being hidden (not so ghetto...or mickey mouse as you call it).

Probably a good idea Jason. I've honestly been to lazy to make any modifications to it since once the seat is in a regular position, you can't even see it. (The entire base/mount attaches to the wood)

I would have to say though that it would probably only be "ghetto" if I bolted a big wing to it (j/k) :D

After having read the replies and realizing that there really was no easy way of turning a cheap laptop stand into a good, sturdy one... I just caved in and purchased a RAM mount.

Thanks for all the feedback!

Joey, let us know how it goes! Im positive you'll love it, they really are worth it! Dont forget to post some pics :)

Will do, I hope to get it this week. I also purchased a Kyocera KR2 router for my data card as well, my data card is PCMCIA and my new laptop only has expresscard slots. So gonna be getting some new toy's this upcoming week, I'm excited :D

I bought a RAM mount for my car this past winter, however it was in the trunk of my car when I was rear-ended in June. Some parts of it survived, however which is a plus.

I want to keep the mount, but am looking for the big bracket mount with one single rod leading up to the laptop tray. The rig I had previous had three flex-steel legs leading up to the tray. This worked okay, but was kind of hard to configure having to bend the flex steel perfectly so that they met up at the tray, and left very little leg room for a passenger (the reason it was in my trunk when it was crunched).

I'd love to get one of the mounting plates that connect to the seat bolts with one single rod leading up to the tray for my Mazda6, but I only see this available for select vehicles. Do you guys generally find your cars on there, or do you go with a similar vehicle? I figure they aren't -that- different and allow for some flexibility with mounting to the seat bolts, but don't want to order anything that isn't even close to what I need.

I just looked up a 05 mazda 6 and just see the 3 leg version. maybe the seat bolts can't get a plate between them due to a heater duct?
