How do do Hand Analysis?

Everybody keeps talking about "good old Hand Analysis". I have no idea how to do this or where to start

Is there a good free tutorial on how to understand and do a hand analysis?

Also where can I get the images from apart from Digital Atmosphere?

I'd highly recommend Tim's books - especially http://www.weathergraphics.com/redbook/

GEMPAK can also generate the maps you would use.

I might ask to get that for Christmas(hey, I'm only 15!), but are there any free online tutorials?

GEMPAK seems okay, but I really can't be bothered to partition my hard disk and install linux. I also can't be bothered to use VMware.
