Hi all, new guy here. I have always been fascinated by sever weather having grown up as a boater here on lake Erie and had an interesting event over the weekend. We were out on the lake in my boat (38 foot 12k lb Donzi) and got hit by a small but powerful downburst off the western shore by Luna Peer Mi. We were out about five miles off shore on late Sunday afternoon and had observed small storms popping up all day in otherwise sunny sky's with calm winds. About 6:30 there was a low cloud building off shore and had a column of water coming out of it that seemed to escalate as it came out over the water. It looked to be maybe about a half mile wide and very pronounced. Just a sheet of dark rain coming straight down in a round column at one end of the cloud. I'm sure this probably wasnt the smartest thing to do but i decided to get a closer look and we basically drove into its path to let it go over, i had checked my radar and there was no recorded lightning. The rain hit us like a waterfall and it built to a ridiculous downpour rather quickly and the temp dropped at my best guess forty degrees or more. Then a side wind hit us that shifted to straight down that must have been on the fifty to sixty mph range. I must say i did get a bit nervous but i knew it was moving quickly and was not very big, the whole thing blew over in probably just a few minutes and it was clear as a bell again. My question is, is it possible to find the radar images for this area from 8/16/09 6:15pm to 7:30pm? This is the general area we were in at the west end of lake erie.
My boat has never been cleaner. As all this was going on i just hoped i wasnt going to come out the other side and it be like 1852 or something.
