Don't know if anybody's noticed - but last night at 9.52PM ST tipped the scale on it's highest ever "users online" count - 401 members and guests all flocked to the forum last night to get the latest on the tornado outbreak that was still ongoing at the time.

I'd sure like to know how many hits that generated.

That's really impressive and when you get that number of people on server for an extended amount of time it will almost always cause problems.

Yep, I was locked out of ST around 11 p.m. last night, kept timing out. It was driving me nuts. I don't know if downgrading to half-speed cable had any play in that or what, but there was absolutely no entering. This is the second time this year that "record" has been broken. On 2-28 I think there were 290 users.

Yep, high user counts and server crashes are a good sign of the growth of ST, and the continued growth of storm chasing. Unfortunately it's also a sign of things to come, with crashes likely happening during every Plains tornado event this season. The traffic and server load will only get worse as we get into the heart of the season. Last year, the server scraped by with only a couple major outages during outbreaks, but I think this year it's not going to be able to handle most of the better chase days without an upgrade.

I wouldn't say it's down for the count yet. I am not entirely sure the extra people on yesterday were the cause of the crash. Probably this weekend after we get all this svr wx out of the plains I will go in and investigate and see about doing some mysql optimizations.

It was either a server or a bandwidth issue, because I couldn't get in either. Kinda like getting slashdotted......one or the other needs to be increased to anticipate future problems!

I suspect mysql got hung up at some point. The main site which is in html was down too. Once I have time to investigate I will know which it was. Sometimes the programs that run things on servers just hang and need to be restarted/rebooted.

It is really nice to see the interest in storm chasing catapult.

Yeah. It's great. LOL.

It's interesting to see the ratio of first-time chasers who are now posting their first-time tornado chase reports to ST after yesterday. I think that this forum might have encouraged a large degree of enthusiasts to take to the roads for the first time.

That is pretty amazing! I also could not get in last night at about 9:00pm mountain time which was pretty close to when there were 401 people using the forum. I did not try very long though since I had a Calculus test today and decided to go to bed early.

It would be interesting to see how that 401 was divided between members and guests. As I'm writing this roughly 75% of the current usage is by guests.

Could be many members who just aren't signed on. I stay logged in all the time, but many people choose to sign out.

Sadly, I was sleeping during the peak user count. I'm sort of out of the weather loop, that's what a week in Florida will do.

PS: I think back on the old forum we blew that number out of the water during Katrina. All that data got lost with the many board changes.

During the period of the original forum, the user online count had broken 800 during one of the more active days. I seem to remember that well.
