• After witnessing the continued decrease of involvement in the SpotterNetwork staff in serving SN members with troubleshooting issues recently, I have unilaterally decided to terminate the relationship between SpotterNetwork's support and Stormtrack. I have witnessed multiple users unable to receive support weeks after initiating help threads on the forum. I find this lack of response from SpotterNetwork officials disappointing and a failure to hold up their end of the agreement that was made years ago, before I took over management of this site. In my opinion, having Stormtrack users sit and wait for so long to receive help on SpotterNetwork issues on the Stormtrack forums reflects poorly not only on SpotterNetwork, but on Stormtrack and (by association) me as well. Since the issue has not been satisfactorily addressed, I no longer wish for the Stormtrack forum to be associated with SpotterNetwork.

I apologize to those who continue to have issues with the service and continue to see their issues left unaddressed. Please understand that the connection between ST and SN was put in place long before I had any say over it. But now that I am the "captain of this ship," it is within my right (nay, duty) to make adjustments as I see necessary. Ending this relationship is such an adjustment.

For those who continue to need help, I recommend navigating a web browswer to SpotterNetwork's About page, and seeking the individuals listed on that page for all further inquiries about SpotterNetwork.

From this moment forward, the SpotterNetwork sub-forum has been hidden/deleted and there will be no assurance that any SpotterNetwork issues brought up in any of Stormtrack's other sub-forums will be addressed. Do not rely on Stormtrack for help with SpotterNetwork issues.

    Sincerely, Jeff D.

Here's how to buy MRE's

Wouldn't MRE's be a great thing to take hurricane chasing, and even "tornado" chasing?

I found out how we can get them. This is the vendor for the Red Cross.

I have eaten them a few times, and they aren't too bad. Not bad at all. They come with a pouch of some chemicals. You pour a bit of water into the pouch, then place the pouch next to the food, and the water reacting with the chemicals in the pouch makes them quite hot. The food gets heated up pretty darn well.

There are 12 meals per box, I think about 4 or 5 different "menues" per box, and each meal is about 1500-2000 calories of nutrition, IIRC. The shelf life is 5 years. Cost is $64.60 per box of 12 meals, which includes shipping, and there is no tax (unless maybe you live in TX?).

Contact Roger Dominguez in El Paso. He said it is okay for me to post his contact info "publicly". Nice guy:

LOL I have tried these - coming from the UK for a hurricane chasing I run the real risk of having NO provisions for the trip - as for MRE's I can only coment on the British Army supplies - a single pack gives you enough food to keep you going for 24 hours - however I challange anyone to actually eat a full pack within 24 hours - they are so full of calories that I nornally need 48 hours to get through one - still this is all history - with the changes in Flight rules MRE's are out as far as bringing them over to the US with me on the plane.

The MRE's from Roger are probably not that filling, though I can't say for sure. Maybe you are a light eater, Stuart, lol. Not me. Now you know where to pick some up stateside if you wish.

New menu's not whithstanding, I remember what we called these when we converted from the old C-Rations....

Meals Refused by Ethiopians

Of course my son tells me they are much better than what we were getting when they were first issued. You can have a little fun with the chem packs as well.:D

I've never had MREs, but if they are anything like the camping meals you can get at outdoor stores, I'll pass! Canned food is probably a little cheaper and more practical. Chef Boyardee is not bad when eaten cold, and canned fruit is a great snack or even a breakfast meal. Less than a buck a can at Wal-Mart. You could even take a propane stove to heat things up (providing you can set it up out of the wind).

If flying with the food is a problem, you could FedEx a box full of food to the hotel you're staying at.

I use the Jetboil stove.

It boils water in 90 seconds. I like to make Mac and cheese and add a can of tuna. Or Instant mashed potatoes with a foil packet of chicken. Any of the freeze dried Mountian house meals work great. So do the instant pasta dishes and some foil or canned meat.

Im kinda with Dan though on the inexpensive canned goods. I do have and have used extensively Mre's and mountain House freeze dried foods. They are ok but for chasing and doing it on the cheap the canned goods from walmart or the like are the best IMO.

With the Jetboil, I boil the water (90 seconds). Add the instant taters or rice or pasta, add the canned meat ( chicken, tuna, salmon, ham, roast beef ) all in about 2 minutes for a hot meal.

While chasing this season I challenged myself to make all of this in the car while my buddy went inside to Mcdonalds. I finished it all up and was ready to eat it as he was exiting with his sack of food.

Hope this helps everyone.. Let me know and I can point you to an inexpensive place to buy one if interested.

The British MREs are an entire day's rations, US MREs are only one meal.
I have had both and if given a choice, I would choose the British ones, but I would rather not have the choice. A good alternative is Heater-Meals. They can be found in some truck stops.

Wow, i went to that Jet boil site and I gotta get one...

I do alot of offroading (jeep trails) in teh winter and that would be perfect, plus come chase season and hurricane season it would be a great thing to have...

I could probably cook a half of one of those Zatarain's meals pretty quick. It'd be nice to have some jambalaya out in teh plains...

Good day,

My favorite is good ole' Campbells chicken soup right out of the can! It's pre-cooked, has the carbs and protien to keep you goin', now has less salt and an easy-open can, so all you need is an (optional) plastic spoon to eat it. These go from 59 - 79 cents at Walmart!

Gammons has his favorite, Chef Boyardi ravioli out of the can!

For hurricane chasing, these are PERFECT! MRE's seem quite expensive and do practically the same thing.

Chris, you mean you're eating the Campbell's condensed soup out of the can? man I bet that's got a nicely concentrated flavor!

Soups are very fillingmeals to me and would be really awesome in combination with one of those jetboil stoves.

Good day,

Definitely ... I usually add about 1/2 can of water to half can of that soup and it's really good. Or just tasty concentrated. It gives you the stuff you need, that's the main thing.

On a stove (heat it up) - That would be great! Chicken noodle is my favorite.

MREs are GREAT! Ate a lot of them when I was in civil air patrol, LOL! The old ones used to have cigarettes in them but the soap gave them a soapy taste according to one of my grandparents...

Our local army and navy surplus sells them for like $5/each or by box which is a lot more. During peacetimes, they are cheaper...

For the history and changes to MREs (and other military rations) go here:

then Combat Feeding -> Rations & Packaging -> MRE or other meal of interest

New in 2008!
Chicken Pesto Pasta, Lasagna w/vegetables, Granola w/milk & blueberries, Instant vanilla or chocolate pudding, Toaster pastries (chocolate chip &, French toast), Chipotle snack bread, Choclettos® candy, Twizzler Nibs®, Chocolate covered coffee beans, Patriot cookies, Cheezits® (hot & spicy), Coffee, Irish cream, Dairy shake (banana/strawberry), Salsa verde, Butter Buds®, Splenda® packet

The contents of one MRE meal bag provides an average of 1250 kilocalories (13 % protein, 36 % fat, and 51 % carbohydrates). One MRE (less the salt packet) provides approximately 1800 milligrams (mg) of sodium. Troops are supposed to eat 3 MREs per day.

Enjoy, because I hate these things (but anything in a pinch).

If you want actual MRE's, alot of army surplus stores (at least in my area) carry them. However if you are a bigger fan of tuna and want to save some cash do what I do and buy those starkist tuna meal to go packs. It comes with a can of tuna in a sealed pouch so you dont need a can opener or need toworry about messy water, and it also comes with some mayo and relish and crackers and a tray to mix it with as well as a spoon and a small mint. They normaly retail for no more than 2 bucks a peice at a Wally World and alot of gas stations carry them now.

Why buy a stove? If you're using the canned stuff, just wedge the cans between your engine and exhaust pipes. That's what Army truck drivers used to do with the cans from c-rats, and they were the only people that never complained about c-rats!
