I can't come up with any words to say, the devastation is beyond words.. so I'll just post the images..

looks like something straight out of a nuclear holocaust...

i was wondering when they were going to have satellite pics out...thanks, j...

No matter how much I look at these pictures, I still get a feeling of sadness that goes through me, because Greensburg was most definitely, a really nice and well kept town, and then to see just how must of it hase been wiped out, it's just simply beyond word, to describe what goes through my mind, and it makes me appreciate even more, that many people pulling together, chasers, Emergency crews, everyday people and survivors, to help the good people of Greensburg and other affected towns, to help them rebuild their homes and their lives.

Holy Cow! I can only imagine how the poor folks of Greensburg must feel when they look at that picture. It makes my stomach turn. My dad used to do buisness in W & C Kansas and he would meet with managers of Quicktrips and my dad was good friends with the owner of the QT in Greensburg who survived the tornado. My dad met with him last week and the owner gave my dad pics of what was left of the QT. I'll have my dad post them if he can find them.

I was there on Wednesday and find it amazing that the main highway is closed STILL. 3 weeks later and a main highway through town ain't open. It was very eerie as they are now burning things, so there are black plumes of smoke on the nw side of town, and total destruction all around.

I helped give a weather safety presentation one week after the Greensburg Tornado, on May 12. I showed these before and after satellite pictures, and it was a pretty stunning reaction from the crowd.

But, humans are like ants. When an anthill gets kicked over by someone, the ants scurry, and immediately begin rebuilding their hill. We're the same way. While the loss of life is tragic, the survivors pick up what's left behind and build again.

All of that is just stuff. We're amazingly good at accumulating stuff, just look at your garage or your basement. I have more stuff than I know what to do with. It's the sentimental value that everyone gets hung up on as humans tend to want to hold on to the past. But, stuff is replacable and new memories can be made.

What's important is that those 1300+ survivors are alive, and that's what matters the most! Livelihoods can be rebuilt. While I've not personally experienced the devastation noted in Greensburg (or New Orleans, e.g.) I would hope that if this ever happens to me, I'd feel the same way. In other words, I'd be thankful that I was alive, and would begin rebuilding the ant hill.

They were actually already burning debris at that dump site when we passed by on US 183 5/10, so that's two+ weeks straight. Simply unbelievable destruction. Of course, I didn't see Jarrell, TX; Moore, OK; Spencer, SD; or any of the other total wipeouts first-hand. Still, I imagine one never really becomes accustomed to seeing this level of destruction...very sad...amazing, the survival rate for this town.
