Ghetto rigging a wind filter

My sony 500V is a great camera minus the fact it has zero wind filter. It gets so bad at times I have to turn the video down or leave our certain sections of video.

Ive googled around for wind filters but can't seem to find any.

So before I start experimenting with things like tape, styrofoam and packing peanuts I want to ask if anyone has any protips on making a ghetto wind filter...

or even better if someone knows where the hell I can buy a real one...

You can make one easily with some furry material. If you have a fuzzy stuffed animal around, you can cannibalize it for the task. The longer the fur, the better. It works surprisingly well.

I had posted a link to a company specializing in Wind Screens in the "Buy From These Companies" thread some time back that I had outstanding luck with. I dealt with a lady by the name of Rebekah who was very quick with the emails and knowledgeable of the products. The prices were pretty decent, especially compared to what B&H was wanting.

I had previously used a 'homemade' wind screen I created out of a furry car-washing mitt that lasted a while but didn't do exactly what I wanted it to do. If I had been able to catch the neighbors cat..........

I wonder about internal camera noises if you cover up the regular internal mics. My panasonic TM700 has a stupid fan built into the thing. If you cover up that mic area it gets real loud on video. I imagine any sort of tape drive deal would be magnified then as well. Course flash based ones without a fan are probably fine.

I stuck an external Azden mic on mine just to get it away from that internal fan crap, but it's just as bad with wind. Worse when it gets windy on the thing there is some dumb popping noise. Probably have to stick one of those fur things they offer made for it on the thing.

They are called Zeppelins when they are for external mics.
The material you want to use is those long haired hippy dusters. I'd cut a patch of it and sew it to some screen material (maybe a drain screen? or some other small screen strainer) and then figure out a way to hold that tight to the camera. (Zip-ties if you can avoid them being in the way of anything else important, perhaps?)

I cut the end off a Car Wash Mitt and zip tied it over my Sony HDR-FX1 mic. Works just fine!
