Gary England, Rest in Peace

Gary England passed away today. Here is my obit: Gary England, Rest in Peace

There is an interesting tidbit about his "appearance" in Twister about which I was not aware.

May he rest in peace.
So sorry to hear this sad news, Mike. Gary was an inspiration to all Oklahoma storm chasers and his enthusiasm and love for tornado chasing was genuine and contagious. Also, he was a legend in the OKC television weather market as Chief Meteorologist at KWTV during the same period that you and Jim Williams were at WKY back in the early 1970s. He will be missed, but never forgotten!

Grew up watching him and fond memories of stormy nights long before there was internet and radar in the palm of your hand. I graduated high school 20 miles from Seiling and always thought it was neat to see the old England Market sign downtown that his parents owned (which is no longer there). I attended "Those Terrible Twisters" back in '86-'87 and was thrilled when he responded to one of my tweets when I was on Twitter.

I still to this day say to my wife, "It's Friday night in the big town, whaddya want to do?". It's like losing a piece of your childhood. Missed him when he retired and really gonna miss him now.

Thank you Gary for all that you did. RIP.

Gary was an institution for sure, to be missed.
When I first moved to OK, I turned on the TV to see & hear him, and I thought to myself, "I'm really here now."
Much like Mike and Warren, Gary had a good book out too called, "Weathering the Storm: Tornadoes, Television, and Turmoil."

Reading that book at around the age of 12-13 was one of the things that steered me into local TV news (although not as a meteorologist). Still have my copy on the shelf.

I just was browsing Facebook tonight and stumbled upon Reed Timmer's post. I had a rough day and hearing that Gary England had passed made my heart sink. He was one of my favorite TV meteorologists. Though while I am saddened he did live a long life. He will be missed by many and he saved so many lives over the years, but the most iconic to me was May 3rd, 1999. He will never be forgotten for sure. He was a legend.
