First Sub-Freezing Conditions and Winter Advisories/Warnings!

Today in Phoenix the high was 97! Believe it or not that felt pretty good. We should start cooling off soon, but I've seen hot weather on Holloween. I'm glad fall is in the air for some of you anyway. One good thing is we had a storm move through here tonight and that has cooled things off alot, until tomorrow, the cooling doesn't last long.

Autumn continues to creep into the midwest. Temps bottomed out in the upper 30s as far south as northern Illinois/Iowa the last few days. Damn near cold enough to frost! A little early for that, but on par with the strange/cool weather the midwest has had all summer.

Upper 30's? It's been down into the upper 40's a couple nights up here north of the cheddar curtain, but the 30's are still way up north.

According to the Oklahoma Mesonet, it was 40 this morning in Chickasha, Oklahoma, about 20-30 SW of Oklahoma City. It was in the mid 40's this morning here in Norman.

The strong shortwave moving through the central Rockies may leave a dusting of snow on Colorado's central mountains above 12k ft MSL during the first half of the day on Sunday (9.21). Warm and mostly dry weather is expected in the wake of this system, and that weather will last for at least the next week with no sign of snow for the southern CO foothills through the end of this month.

In a month where the average daily temperature drops 9 degrees from the 1st to the 30th, the second half of September 2008 in Beulah may turn out to be warmer than the first half, due to ridging that built into the state early last week that is expected to persist through at least next weekend.

I expect the first snow to fall up here during the first week of October - the current ridge pattern will have lasted longer than expected for the season at that point, and climatology favors that time of year for the ridge-killing trough to be cold enough for precipitation to fall as snow at lower foothill elevations.

Record Cool

Thursday, 9/25, Gainesville recorded a record low temperature of 55. Normal low this time of year is around 65. When I first moved here I was a little shocked to find out the temp had never dropped below 50 on any day in any year here for the month of September. I guess what seems most surprising in not that 55 is a record, but that the record is only 10 degrees cooler than the norm. That makes a pretty strong statement about the nature/absence of frontal passage for this part of the country in September.

The record low this year was due to the deep low along the Carolina coast drawing cooler/dryer air southward along its western flow. It has been gloriously pleasant with high temps only reaching the mid 80's and somewhat low surface td's. Too bad I haven't found time to go fishing .

it's getting cold in Illinois as well.. Northern suburbs got down to mid 40s 9/28 overnight. It is going to be a looong cold winter me thinks...

May brush the upper 40's here in southern Oklahoma tonight. Man I love Fall. Can't wait 'till late October when we get the cool drizzly nights followed by cool crisp and sunny days.
