• After witnessing the continued decrease of involvement in the SpotterNetwork staff in serving SN members with troubleshooting issues recently, I have unilaterally decided to terminate the relationship between SpotterNetwork's support and Stormtrack. I have witnessed multiple users unable to receive support weeks after initiating help threads on the forum. I find this lack of response from SpotterNetwork officials disappointing and a failure to hold up their end of the agreement that was made years ago, before I took over management of this site. In my opinion, having Stormtrack users sit and wait for so long to receive help on SpotterNetwork issues on the Stormtrack forums reflects poorly not only on SpotterNetwork, but on Stormtrack and (by association) me as well. Since the issue has not been satisfactorily addressed, I no longer wish for the Stormtrack forum to be associated with SpotterNetwork.

I apologize to those who continue to have issues with the service and continue to see their issues left unaddressed. Please understand that the connection between ST and SN was put in place long before I had any say over it. But now that I am the "captain of this ship," it is within my right (nay, duty) to make adjustments as I see necessary. Ending this relationship is such an adjustment.

For those who continue to need help, I recommend navigating a web browswer to SpotterNetwork's About page, and seeking the individuals listed on that page for all further inquiries about SpotterNetwork.

From this moment forward, the SpotterNetwork sub-forum has been hidden/deleted and there will be no assurance that any SpotterNetwork issues brought up in any of Stormtrack's other sub-forums will be addressed. Do not rely on Stormtrack for help with SpotterNetwork issues.

    Sincerely, Jeff D.

FindU

Johnathan the crux of findu is to be able to send an APRS packet into the APRS network if you can make this happen (check out http://www.byonics.com/tinytrak/ coupled to a simple 2MTR rig)

then you will be able to use FINDU

As an aside I found that APRS coverage to ok in Texas and Oklahoma - but very patchy as you get into North Kanas and nebraska. I was using a Kenwood APRS rig on 50W with a good antenna.

Stuart makes a good observation. Even with a proper setup there are holes in the network of digital repeaters that leave your APRS position hanging in the wind. Northcentral Kansas is definitely a prime example. Once I left the Manhattan area last week on a chase, the digipeaters became scare leaving my position to be shown just outside of town.

Another issue with showing up on FindU is not only digipeater coverage, but coverage that can lead you to an internet gateway. Not all digipeaters are connected to the internet, and unless your packet bounces around to be caught by one that is, you will not show up on FindU.

Definitely post questions you may have with regard to specifics, there are a number of APRS users here.

Oh.. I think Tyler had something on his site about the integration with the Ul View 32 program?
I wish I were more computer savy but I have help with the software part of this. Once you are set up, it's good to go.
I also use a Franson GPS splitter program. It's cheap and reliable.

That's the gadget John but I had help with the FINDU setup process and don't know the specifics.
I really like the system.

Careful with that model; the USB version only outputs the Garmin proprietary format; the serial model will also output NMEA format which is what you need for most programs that use GPS data. I use the serial model and agree that it performs very well.

Jonathan and all,

Here's a link to using APRS with Ui-View via the internet (which is the most reliable). To use findu.com u have to report your position via APRS, then you'll be able all the features of the website.

http://www.stormtrack.org/forum/showthread.php?t=8321&highlight=aprs

I use UI-View for APRS, which allows me to have maps on my website showing my location while chasing.

Let me know if I can help (I'm not an expert but I'll try my best)

I modified an application to report my position using a FindU script.... This puts my APRS information into the APRS database without actually having to use a radio! The application takes lat/lon information from my GPS and submits it every xxx seconds to the "inputpos" CGI script at Findu (so HERE). My goal has been to then use a script on my website to pull location information from the APRS system using another FindU script to plot my short-term track and location on a Google Maps page. I had it working for a little while back in 2005, but I broke it last year and haven't had time to fix it. Regardless, this is an effective method by which to get your information into the APRS world without having to be in "APRS coverage", though you do need an internet connection.
