Quick question. I have noticed some Youtubers and Googlers posting video with Copyrighted Songs. Because there is no Fee that these users charge does that make it okay to use Copyrighted Music? Main reason I am asking is cause I am starting to Capture all of myvideo to my PC and want to add tracks to the videos. Is it okay to add any Music Track as long as I dont chrage anyone and give Credit, such as "song By", etc?

If you don't have explicit permission from the creator of the music, or the license holder (in the case of recording labels) for YOU to use it, then no it's not ok.

If someone in the store sticks a CD in their jacket and walks out with it, does that make it ok for you to do it?

You have to assume that anything and everything (photos, video, music, text, graphics, clip art etc) is copyrighted unless you have explicit permission from the creator to use it. Royalty-free music is the way to go for producing videos - you pay $10-$30 for a song that you can then incorporate into a video for online or DVD use.

Wow, after checking several sources for Royalty Free Music I am finding that I might be spending a good deal of money on a video that I wont make any money with. How is everyone putting together storm chasing DVD's with music and still making money? I found one track including the License for over 60 dollars.

Is there such a thing as Non licensed music that people can use without violating copyright or what not?

My situation is unique. Years before I ever made a chase video (early 2001), I emailed the record label of my favorite band and asked permission from the band through them. It took a couple of months, but eventually I got a personal reply from the guitarist who said I could use their music as much as I wanted, the only two stipulations were (1) I give the band full credit for all the music and (2) the band got free copies of the video. On December 12, 2005, the band played in Oklahoma City for the first time in over a decade, and I was able to make good on the 2nd condition of our deal. So much time had gone by they didn't even remember, LOL.

But the cool thing is, I have permission for unlimited use of their music on my videos for free, all I have to do is give the band credit. They have 14 albums and I've only got four videos, so there's enough of them to last me the rest of my days on chase video soundtracks.

Sounds awesome Shane. I figure I will try and contact as many artists from Soundclick to get permission and go from there. I will also try and get Permission from a few widely known artists but know the chances of a reply are slim to none.

Would be nice if we could get a list of the resources that all chasers use for music.

We did something like that Shane with one of the popular Texas Country artists. It's actually surprising what you can get permission to use just by bothering to ask.

I've also been fortunate to be allowed to use some stuff from some new artists that aren't really known, but are really good! Collaboration can benefit everyone.

On behalf of musicians, thanks for honoring both ends of that deal, Shane. It's amazing how often permission is given and yet no product is ever seen by the recording artist.

Tim Samaras was a joyous exception for me.

That is a goal of mine as well. Not only will the artist get promotion by The video but he/she will also be able to enjoy how I incorporated there work into my work.

I have contacted several artists thus far, still looking for more music as I will be creating alot of video that will need music. So if any Artists on the board want to Give permission for me to use there work It will be greatly appreciated.

Btw: Thanks to David and the rest of the people that cleared up the Music use issue. I only hope more and more people will research before creating a video with music that isn't there's.

Not all royalty free music is that expensive. Search around. I have found some sites that give away a few tracks for free as samples, I even found one source that had a fairly large selection of tracks and all was free. They only requested credit. And they even mentioned that credit was "requested but not required". Every year I buy a few tracks from different sources. I have quite a collection now without laying out a large sum of money at once.

I've been fortunate enough to have a music-source myself through a buddy of mine. DJ Dani Garza has not only supplied me with tunes, but has created a few specifically for my DVDs. Certainly a nice trade-off to have that resource available. He does a great job and his music kicks butt. He's doing more for me for my upcoming new release, so I look forward to hearing the new stuff!
