• After witnessing the continued decrease of involvement in the SpotterNetwork staff in serving SN members with troubleshooting issues recently, I have unilaterally decided to terminate the relationship between SpotterNetwork's support and Stormtrack. I have witnessed multiple users unable to receive support weeks after initiating help threads on the forum. I find this lack of response from SpotterNetwork officials disappointing and a failure to hold up their end of the agreement that was made years ago, before I took over management of this site. In my opinion, having Stormtrack users sit and wait for so long to receive help on SpotterNetwork issues on the Stormtrack forums reflects poorly not only on SpotterNetwork, but on Stormtrack and (by association) me as well. Since the issue has not been satisfactorily addressed, I no longer wish for the Stormtrack forum to be associated with SpotterNetwork.

I apologize to those who continue to have issues with the service and continue to see their issues left unaddressed. Please understand that the connection between ST and SN was put in place long before I had any say over it. But now that I am the "captain of this ship," it is within my right (nay, duty) to make adjustments as I see necessary. Ending this relationship is such an adjustment.

For those who continue to need help, I recommend navigating a web browswer to SpotterNetwork's About page, and seeking the individuals listed on that page for all further inquiries about SpotterNetwork.

From this moment forward, the SpotterNetwork sub-forum has been hidden/deleted and there will be no assurance that any SpotterNetwork issues brought up in any of Stormtrack's other sub-forums will be addressed. Do not rely on Stormtrack for help with SpotterNetwork issues.

    Sincerely, Jeff D.

Canon XTi problem

I experienced a problem with my Canon XTi last night. Luckily it was at the end of the chase.
I was shooting lightning with a cable release when it stopped shooting. It acted like it was still taking a long exposure, but the exposure setting wasn't that long. I tried turning the camera off, but it wouldn't turn off. I ended up pulling the battery and starting it up again. It did the same thing.

I checked it out this morning and it made a strange sound when I took a picture. almost like the mirror is rubbing on something and moving very slow. The battery was low, so I got my spare battery to check it out further and it seams to work fine with the fresh battery.

Is this something I should worry about? usually if the battery is too low to operate the camera properly, it just won't come on.

i'd keep an eye on it, could be one of the servo's going bad. you can send it to canon for repair, or go to a Wolf Camera or a Ritz Camera and get it fixed for a fee.

I've had a similar issue, but without the sound/mirror issue. How 'loud' was the sound? Do you ever change lenses in the field...sometimes dirt can sneak in even with the best effort not to. If you don't resolve it before I'm out west, I'll take a peak and we can compare "issues" I have the XT, but mechanically shouldn't be any different.

I've done about 22,000 images on mine without much issue. The issue I have had occurred a number of years ago, and I've only had to do the battery removal process to fix the issue. About how many photos have you taken?

I had a similar thing happen to my XTI last year, only happened once. It acted like it was taking a long exposure, but it wasn't. I just removed the battery for a couple of minutes and it worked after that and haven't had a problem since.

The noise was not very loud. It does kind of sound like a sluggish servo. maybe there wasn't enough juice in the battery. It seems to be working fine, but just in case, I think I will buy a new body. That one is about 2 years old and has taken a LOT of pictures. It would probably have to be over 20,000.
