Hello,

I'm looking to get a nice camera for storm chasing for Christmas and had a particular interest in the Canon Rebel EOS T1i vs. the Xsi. I wanted to know more about this camera before I made a purchase.

Does it take great lightning, tornado, storm structure pictures? Is there something better under the $800 price tag or would the T1i be the camera to go? If anyone has pictures they took with the camera, would you be willing to post it?

Thank you for all your help,

Taylor

Even a Canon Rebel Xt will take great pictures for storms. It is the lenses that you must also be concerned about. The stock lens may not have a wide enough angle to catch what you are hoping for. Camera bodies are important; but not as much as the lens...

The preferred lens for this camera or the Rebel Xt is the Canon 10-22mm f/3.5 wide angle lens.
They sell for about ~$750 plus tax!

EDIT: An XTi is also a decent choice.

T1i is basically the same body as the the XSi with exception of the increase in MP and the HD video. The imager is the same size, they shoot the same burst rates and they have the same button layout and menu system.
I have an XSi and plan to buy a T1i for a second body to have so I do not have to change lenses in the wind, rain, dirt, etc. At the prices these things go for, why not?

I'd buy a cheaper body and save for the more expensive glass if cost is important up-front. If you have the money for the T1i, buy it. If not, The XSi will be just fine.
As Rob said too, the XT is a very capable body and you can pick those up for nothing these days. There' a little something for everyone, I suppose.
Hope this helps.
