The best way to do it is through a LanC or A/V R remote. Primarily it is only Sony and Canon cameras that have this feature. Here is a list of some of the compatible cameras: http://www.aquatix.com/lanc_camcorders.htm
Many camcorders accept a wired remote control via a LANC port. In the case of the Sony models like I use, there a third party conversion cable that gives you this access along with the RCA component out.
Thanks for the help and to Skip for giving the idea of a dome. Is the LANC port the same as the Audio/Video out or would a splicer allow for both video/audio out and the remote in?
That is what Skip is talking about. Sony uses their own A/V R port because they like to feel special and use their one design (Sort of like how they use memory stick instead of sd cards) but you can by an adaptor that will let you hook up a normal LANC remote's minijack plug AND still use the A/V cables. Here is the required splitter: http://www.studio1productions.com/lanc-sa.htm
