As I stated in a recent thread I'm looking at buying a new DSLR. I don't need the 15 MP that the 50D has and I don't want to spend so much money, so I'm looking into the 40D. They have new ones on Amazon.com, but I can get one refurbished for 700 on Adorama.com. I was wondering if anyone has bought a refurbished camera from them before. I'm a bit weary about buying a refurb camera. Almost lean toward getting a new one from Amazon.

I purchased a refurb'd 55-250is from Adorama with no issues, but not a camera. Don't know if you are open to it, but if you are leary of the refurb'd route, you could pursue buying a used one. There are plenty of 40D's listed for sale on this Canon forum. You have to be a member to access the "sell" area, but I've found it to be a great resource. I've purchased a few things from other members on that forum and have had no issues. You can generally find 40D bodies for $600 and up, and ones with a grip for around $700.

Most factory refurbs come with a short 1~3 month warranty. IMO, that's worth an extra ~$100 bucks. Check, and keep checking, Newegg and B&H too; they'll receive a pile of refurbs every so often, and usually sell out within a few days.

I trust Adorama, having purchased from them a few times. My Hi8 camera purchase in 1998 from them was a refurbish, because it was otherwise about $900. Spent I think $750 or something like that. I still have the camera, and it still works.

I bought my 30D refurbished from Adorama last year. For all intents and purposes it was new. The same goes for my 70-200 f4L which I also purchased refurbished from Adorama.

I've been working both of them to death and have had no issues whatsoever.

I bought my 50mm f/1.4 Canon lens from Adorama for $200. Works great - no problem whatsoever. They called me back and asked if I wanted to buy the used 24-70mm f/2 for $900 that I was eying at the same time. I said no - not at this time. They asked me if I was happy with the purchase of the 50mm and if I needed anything else. Sure - what's not to like? I saved $50 over a new one with the same guarantee. It came in the factory box with all of the paperwork and packing. It is the finest lens I own - maybe not the most expensive lens I own - but the quality of the 50mm is superb for the money spent.

They are a very competitive lot, and I don't fault them for that. But their sales crew are more than willing to make sure every deal that happens is solid. IMO - they are a decent lot to do business with. Rest assured - they take care of their valued customers...

EDIT: I also bought the 'Adorama' brand of lens hoods for my 50mm and my 10-22mm. They cost about ~$10 less than the genuine Canon hoods - but absolutely NO loss of quality. The fit is precise and w/o slop. Worth every penny - imo. Don't be afraid to buy one - too! Made a nice difference in the 50mm and a slight one in the 10-22mm - but an appreciable difference just the same. The look and have all of the same dimensions as the OEM Canon hoods. You'll be pleased; I am.
Also bought a lens pen from them - too.

Thanks for the feedback!

There is a big difference between the Adorama refurbished and used departments. The used equipment we hold in stock has been purchased from members of the public. Refurbished items are delivered to us directly by the manufacturer who has carried out the refurbishment therefore they have all been restored to the exact manufacturer specifications.

Most factory refurbs come with a short 1~3 month warranty. IMO, that's worth an extra ~$100 bucks.

Refurbished by Canon from Adorama come with a 12-month return-to-Adorama warranty.

I trust Adorama, having purchased from them a few times.

We really do appreciate when our customers can take the time to let us know that we are providing good service, however, If you ever have a query or concern regarding an order from Adorama Camera - or AdoramaPix - please don't hesitate to contact me directly.
