Mmmm.... ensembles...

http://wdtb.noaa.gov/tools/BUFKIT/index.html

What's New:

1. Ensemble support. BUFKIT supports up to forecast profiles with up to 16 ensemble elements.
2. Plume Diagrams. Many of the BUFKIT overview displays can be toggled into plume displays
3. Snow Accumulation. Summing up hourly snowfall amount to get a total is not the way snow is measured. BUFKIT 10.5 provides a new “Snow Accumulation†plot to align hourly model output with official snow measurement procedures.
4. Keyboard Shortcuts. BUFKIT 10.5 provides many keyboard shortcuts for commonly used functions. Examples include the arrow keys to navigate through time and ensembles, and the “E†key to toggle ensemble elements on and off.
5. CAPE-Shear diagrams. Three new CAPE-Shear diagrams are available on the profile panel.
6. Geographic site selection. In addition to choosing a site by its ID. You can now use the Map display to select a forecast profile.
7. Compressed BUFKIT file support. Bufkit 10.5 (and Bufget) accepts “.BUZ†files in addition to “.BUF†files. The .BUZ files are less than 30% of the size of the equivalent “.BUF†file.
8. Time cursor. On the overview display, the current selected forecast hour (displayed on the profile panel) is highlighted with a vertical cursor. (The keyboard shortcut “C†toggles the cursor on and off.)
9. Profile in Picture (PIP). When PIP is selected, BUFKIT inserts a forecast profile into the overview display. The forecast hour is determine by the left-clicking the mouse on the overview display.
10. BUFGET Enhancements. BUFGET can now support 20 site lists. Also, BUFGET retrievals are now much more robust and can recover from incorrect URLs.

Make sure you remove all the files from the data folder after the installation and before the first usage. If you don't, you might get an error 6 overflow if you have those old files while trying to use the current buf and buz files.

Steps are :

Install
remove files from data folder (keep the archive folder)
download current data (00z or 12z)
run bufkit

Nice thing to add is the CONRAD module (free as well)

I just recently downloaded the latest BUFKIT and have it nearly customized for my locations but I am still struggling with the Ensamble data from BUFGET. The profiles are all pre-loaded into BUFGET but when I ask for the data to be retrieved there are only error messages. Any suggestions?

I saw this a few months ago and downloaded the update... The WRF ensembles are a nice thing to look at and the new setup is okay...

Who came up with the idea though for the hours to go from right to left? That is fairly strange!

To continue with the ensemble discussion, there are a few NWS pages that have available the SREF ensembles in BUFKIT format (haven't really found any that are on the Plains though!). I believe that by late 2011 NOAA expects to have full support for SREF BUFKIT ensembles, IIRC...

I couldn't agree with you more and I would love the ability to screen grab the hodographs. But the 'Overview' feature is amazing. By far the best new feature.

When I was debating on downloading the new version I saw the screen grabs with spaghetti plots on the model sounding data. That's what pushed me over the top to get it, but so far I have not been able to get the data for my locations.

It's actually normal if you think about it... Since the weather in the US generally moves west to east, you are looking at from an "upstream" point of view (i.e. what is coming at you.)

I see dozens in the plains - are you looking in the right spot?

It's there - just press the printkey button or use the screen grab program in Win7.

That part has been in there for about 10 years now ;) Works great with dual-monitor since you can sync them together.

so far I have not been able to get the data for my locations.

What spots are you looking for? Seems like all the IL points are updated.

rdale,

I just noticed the 'ensamble' button that you can click to get the spaghetti plot to show up. Thanks for the help. Steep learning curve so far for me.

It's more like a learning mountain than a curve ;) I'm always finding something new (or realizing I guessed wrong on what a feature did...)

Gotcha... In many cases you just need to ask - I'm sure they are generating them internally but probably aren't aware that outsiders would be looking.

Understandable... I'll have to give a few emails to some of the NWS guys/gals I know and see if they can provide a few links to the SREF data. It will be nice though when it is available in a central location and available full-time...

Check with PSU and see if they'll do it? I do locally, but don't have the resources to kake them available om a national level...
