While driving to work on Monday, February 5, I encountered this amazing roll cloud moving across the Richmond Virginia area (7:15 AM - 7:19 AM) It was briefly illuminated by the rising sun. I managed to stop along 195 and take a few cell phone pictures and video. View to the north-northeast. The colors were spectacular. Roll clouds are fairly uncommon, and I've only encountered them near storms while storm chasing. They form from cold outflow. In this case, there were no storms nearby. The temperature was approximately 36 degrees, and there was reported ice resulting in school delays. In additional to multiple pictures, I've also added some archived weather data from nearby Richmond International Airport. Images on the link below. This is a Facebook gallery but one doesn't have to be a Facebook member to see them.
