That had me concerned too. I like being able to run GEMPAK off of my laptop - I don't own a desktop (yet), so this would be a frustration.

NSSL has a working beta in the Hazardous Weather Testbed. However, it is still very buggy and has memory leaks that make it unstable for long periods of time. Definitely has a ways to go.rdale

Java was a mind blowing decision from the start. No surprise at the massive delay. But plenty of disappointment.
I agree with rdale, the decision to go with java never made a lot of sense to me when it could easily have been made a native application... Especially now with some of the questions around java and what Oracle will do with it and how much will be open, etc. Oofda...

Perhaps I won't completely ditch GEMPAK after all... I'm not a huge fan of Java. I've always known it to be slow and buggy.

Is it just the public/Unidata release that's getting delayed, or does that also include the NWS release? If it includes the latter, I would hope the government is penalizing the developer for missed milestones.rdale

Some offices have been using it for a while. Full of bugs, and plenty of things it doesn't do, but my guess is they met their deadlines by doing it that way.rdale

Looks like some movement on the AWIPS II front.
"Unidata AWIPS II version 14.2.1 is being released as a beta and will be freely available to download. Beta testing sites can access a new Unidata EDEX Azure Cloud Server to display IDDdata in CAVE. Non-EDU domains (.com, .gov, etc.) will need to install and configure their own EDEX Data Server."
