Aurora Borealis Picture Taking

Yep, I was out tonight. Much better show tonight than last night and I think my picture quality is much better than last night too. Will get them up when I get home.
 
These were taken a few miles northwest of Hinckley, MN. Best show was between sunset and about 11:15 pm. Still learning the ropes for aurora photography but better than I did last night. It was very cool to watch and listen to the loons as well!

Really briefly I had pillars on the horizon, not nearly as bright as Tuesday nights display. I had to have the 50mm 1.8 on to get them to show up at all. Watched till 3am waiting for that second CME to hit only to wake up and see that they cancelled the watch saying,

"It appears that the two coronal mass ejections observed on 1 August merged into one event that became geoeffective late on 3 August."

This is easily more annoying that cap busting. I think I'm waiting for a Class X or M flare before I go out watching again, especially since I'll in back in Nebraska in a week. I did see 16 meteors, 9 of which were perseids, only one fireball that left a trail, but still good to see decent activity over a week from the peak.

There was only one CME I believe. The 2nd blast was from a magnetic filament eruption that was triggered by 1092's ejection. According to NOAA, the 2nd blast is due to arrive today/tonight. It appears they are still sticking with this thinking also, so hopefully that comes to fruition. I am still not very optimisitic though.

Man, I should have REALLY gone out on Tuesday night. Like everyone else, I was waiting for that Bz to surge southward before heading out. Apparently it doesn't always need to.

EDIT: Nevermind. I should have done some reading up before I posted that. I hadn't checked in on what's going on for a few hours now (at work) and just saw NOAA's wording. Another aurora bust for IL! Quite alright, I wasn't expecting anything till solar max in 2012-2013 anyway.
 
Here are a couple from near home from Tuesday 8-03-10. I really wish I had the $$$$ for a full frame D700 just for the low noise factor. These are f3.5 30s ISO 800. The first one was right after sunset as a test to see if they were visible to the camera from the deck. The second was out in the Sherburne NWR just north of me and has had some MAJOR post noise reduction done. The clouds really raised heck with the clarity also...oh well. Maybe we'll get an X class flare at some point again.

Hey guys i'm a complete newb to this kind of stuff. I'm down in Southern Ohio and I am trying to figure out if it'd be possible to even catch the faintest glimpse of the aurora tomorrow? I can't quite figure out the Space Weather Prediction Center's forecast. Thanks.:o
 
Just had an M class solar flare which is stronger than the C class we just had hit. Only this one is not fully directed at earth, so probably will not cause much activity. If nothing else it's good to see the sun becoming more active. Any future eruptions from 1093 in the next few hours would be directed at earth.
