Acceptable emails to register?

I received a message yesterday from another weather enthusiast regarding sign-up requirements here on StormTrack. He has a gmail account as well as a yahoo account, both of which he says will not allow him to register. I tried searching on the forum or within the FAQ and it does not have any details regarding what emails are acceptable to use to register.

Any idea what I can tell him?

Thanks

It has been a while since I registered this last time, but I do remember that you pretty much have to have a "paid" based email. Yahoo, hotmail, msn, gmail, etc. don't work. Such ISPs like comcast, turner, verizon, etc. are OK. Of course your own domain is also a good one.

I believe it is a measure to help prevent 'anonymous' registrations and spammers. Tim V. will say further I'm sure. I don't think mods/staff handle any registrations.

Many of the free emails are indeed filtered out. The moderators don't handle registrations but we got quite a few requests about it that were forwarded on to Tim. You can always change your email once your account is setup, so if you have an email from your ISP, school, or business, that might be best to use for the registration until you are approved.

I registered with a paid-based email account and then converted to a gmail based account. This is the best course of action.

I hate having to set up email accounts just to register for crap. If I stop getting grandfathered in with my yahoo account, I'll just stop registering.

Some of us don't live and die with email, and therefore it's not worth setting up a "special" account that's private and local. Yahoo works just fine.

I had to get a gmail account a few years ago so I would be accepted by the company that hosts my site, and I never use it. All it's good for is dumping 2300 spam emails from every few months.

It's 100% opposite for me. My own domain works best, but yahoo....well it's where I send anything that requires an email that I really am never going to follow-up on, and it's 99% spam anyway, so I don't check it, and just dump it once every few months like you mentioned.

I will let him know...

Also, for future references I think there should be some sort of FAQ or mention of this when trying to register.

It use to...maybe it doesn't anymore. I agree, it should noted as such if it isn't already.

It looks like some wording on the registration page may need to be cleaned up a bit. The only mention of 'free email' that I saw on the registration page implies that such accounts are okay:

(MANDATORY) We require that you write a few sentences here so the admins can know who you are. This will be used to help approve your application. IF YOU SKIP THIS STEP YOU WILL NOT BE APPROVED. If you are using a free e-mail account (GMail, Yahoo, etc), it is especially important that you provide a good description of your background. This information is private and is not displayed to anyone except administrators.
I know we used to filter out these freebies for spam-control purposes, but perhaps this has changed in the past couple of weeks. It's been a long time since I checked the registration pages, so I'm not sure if this is new or if this is something that slipped through when free accounts were disallowed.
