Storms in town were pretty fun. Will do a short report later. A good portion of the se side of town here in Blair, Nebraska is still without power.

Iowa storms - earlier today and now...

I'm in Iowa City - I went out for a short backyard chase towards Linn Co. at around 6 PM this evening when the first round of storms was racing to the NE though Eastern IA at almost 50 mph. That cell became increasingly outflow-dominant as I drove towards Cedar Rapids. The gust front hit as I was approaching the Eastern IA Airport exit (5 miles S of Cedar Rapids). It was amusing to watch a passenger jet as it approached the main runway from the east - the normal approach for traffic from ORD. Suddenly, at a few hundred feet altitude, it did a sudden U-turn and turned back around towards the east while rapidly climbing. I gave up on chasing that stuff...

Now (11 PM CDT), the second line of "storms" is approaching Iowa City. This is obviously a cold-pool setup. The leading edge of the storms is only 10 miles to my west, and yet I still see stars in that direction. Any “anvilsâ€￾ – these storms are now only 15-20 kft as indicated by radar – are pushing off to the NE with the mid- and upper-flow. All in all, not much is going on. I expect perhaps a 30 mph gust, brief heavy rainfall, and maybe a bolt of lightning or two…
