The MCS that tracked much further south than progged yesterday left a long trail of severe wind damage from PA into NJ and NYC. In fact, around 7:30AM this morning (Wednesday), several funnel clouds were reported in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn. A tornado warning was issued for Brooklyn, Queens and Southern Nassau County.

Preliminary reports indicate significant damage to Bay Ridge - Brooklyn with numerous trees down, roofs ripped off houses and shingles and siding torn off others. The NWS is currently enroute with a storm survey team.

Major flooding also occurred and flooded out most subway and mass transit train lines.

If they indeed conclude there was a tornado, would'nt that be the second for new york city this year? What are the odds....I saw the warning on GR3 this morning but I didnt think to save the screen, as Im guilty of thinking to myself "probly just someone reporting scud as a funnel"

I thought tornadoes dont happen in the city :p

This would not be the second this year for NYC...the other tornado was out here on Long Island and over hour away from NYC proper. Funny though...the warning did NOT include where this "possible" tornado was! I was in part of warning area and even was listed as being in the path of the tornado...and I slept through all of it! I really didn't think it was that bad...

Interesting. Does anybody have any gr level 3 data or old radar archive of this?

Funny that you should say that...whenever there is a tornadic storm in the NYC metro area, I take screenshot of the radar. But these last two tornadoes in the NYC metro area have taken place in the morning and I haven't been able to get screenshot of the storms.

Mayor Bloomberg is reporting 40 building damage in Brooklyn with 1 church;s roof ripped off. 4 different neighborhoods in Brooklyn reported significant tree and roof damage. Some of the damage images on wnbc.com and cbs2ny.com are very impressive. Too make things worse, the storms dropped 1.5-3.5" of rain in a short time. Many roads, underpasses and railroad stations (including the NYC Subway system) have been flooded. Numerous water rescues took place. Water was reported almost to the rooftops of cars near Newark Airport and Penn Station-Newark. One fatality has been reported due to the flooding thus far.

From the minimal images I have seen, the damage looks consistent with an EF1 rated tornado. I would be very surprised if a TOR was not confirmed here...especially since funnel clouds were sighted by the public.

The next question is...was the TOR warning issued before or after the tornado touched down?

Thanks mike for the link...Has anyone else had trouble loading the last few frames? They showed a still of the radar image on the news of when it was producing the "tornado." Looked like there was something that might resemble a hook echo.

I had the pleasure of being outside at 4:30am in Norwalk today (building fire alarm). It was 80 degrees and foggy, officially the muggiest air I have ever felt in this part of the country. Actually the muggiest I have felt outside of Bangkok.

I had no idea storms were in the forecast and we ended up just sleeping though some very heavy rains. It wasn't until I woke up later in the morning that we found out about the chaos unfolding in the city.
