I had the pleasure of viewing a rare episode of "Structure in the City" when a tornado warned cell passed through Brooklyn NY.

I noticed the cell on radar around 5:00 p.m when it was near Allentown PA. It exhibited a decent hook and a TVS for a few scans. Around this time, spotters reported a funnel cloud.

As luck would have it, the cell tracked pretty much over my apartment. A good friend had access to a rooftop so I headed over there for the show. Amazingly enough, the roof left me in perfect position :)

Here's a shot looking southwest towards the updraft base:

As the cell tracked east-northeast a ragged wall cloud passed by about an eighth of a mile to my west. There was decent inflow and I observed some broad rotation around the wall cloud. It was a bit surreal seeing the storm dynamics imposed on a the city scale.

Here's the view looking due west with lower manhattan in the background at around 6:30

I oberseved rising motion and a clear slot... All the while people below were completely oblivious to the show above them !

Inflow picked up and the rotation tightened briefly but I never thought it would produce.

The storm continued tracking to the north east and I grabbed this shot of the meso looking due north.. The tall building is the Williamsburg savings bank which is about 3 blocks from my apartment.

This was an unexpected treat.. I had been pretty bummed that I couldn't make it out to the plains this year but to see something like this a few blocks from home is pretty amazing.

cheers,

joel
