6/22/10 REPORTS: WY/NE

Chased the big HP bomb storm from north of Cheyenne, WY into Nebraska. North of Kimbal the RFD dust and precip cleared long enough to get a view into the core. Still not sure if this was rotating that strongly or not..

Possible Tornado? CR59 and CR52 - 15 miles northeast of Kimbal, NE at 23:20z (5:20pm MDT)

First ever report

Today was awesome for me. I live in Iowa and it has been a terrible year there as you know. I have seen some good lightning and some gust fronts, etc but today I finally was able to see some good storm structure. I was actually traveling along I-80 and off in the distance I could see a large updraft. Since I am so new at this I didn't know how far it was away and I had no data but I suspected it was around 60 or so miles out. I went into chase mode and was hoping I could make it to the storm before it traveled too far north. It was a good guess because around an hour later I was close enough to get some pictures. Just outside of Sidney I came to a rest stop up on a hill that gave me a good vantage point for some photos. I imagine this was the same cell that Verne Carlson was on. I believe I took these photos around 5 pm MDT along I-80 just west of Sidney. Wish I had more time to track this storm but I was very happy to see it.

I actually watched this storm come in from Goshen, County on Radar. Had an amazing hook on it. Prolific HP supercell. Very likely was a tornado in some of those shots. Had the same problem with the Springs storm on June 11, 2010, and the Last Chance storm the day prior. Had to time lapse the motion to actually verify what appeared to be rain and hail shrouded circulations, my 2 cents.

Mods: I'm not sure if IA reports should be in here or in a separate thread, as the target areas were different, but touched on the same state (NE).

IA looked like it was going to be a cap bust, but the early evening introduction of a LLJ and some other factors eventually allowed 4 cells to go up ~75 miles east of Sioux City, IA. These cells merged into two clumps, went Tor warned, and had quite a few reports on them.

We played with the Sac City cell (back) for awhile, until the Pocahontas cell (front) got some tighter rotation. Saw well defined wall clouds on both cells at times, but night quickly set in and the only illumination was from the barrage of CG. There was some decent rotation when the front cell entered into the Eagle Grove area, but we were sitting less than 5 miles out with a good view and never saw any tornadoes, let alone funnels. So I'm not sure what the people reporting things were seeing.

There was a report of a "wedge funnel" which looked to be a non-rotating outflow feature. If anyone has pictures of any of these funnels/tornadoes on either cell, I would love to see them, we simply didn't see anything reportable besides rotating wall clouds.

The several inches of standing water on 169 on the drive home was not a fun way to end the night.

After a bit of frustration with storms in NW KS, finally got on a cell that formed north of Goodland and moved north with the outflow boundary from the KS storms. I almost blew that one off too....until a new updraft formed and exploded into an impressive LP beast with a TVS and tornado warned pretty quickly after that generally west of Hayes Center, NE.

Definitely in the tops of most impressive updrafts and storm formation I've ever witnessed. Saw a possible funnel under the wall cloud, but too far away to confirm. One was reported by a spotter. Talked to a local who was under it and said it was nicely formed and smooth cone shape with rapid rotation.

The new updraft that caught my attention.

Same here. We were at the Sac City airport at the time the tornado was reported there, and we only saw a wall cloud, and an unorganized area of strong rotation, but never a funnel or tornado.

We saw plenty of wall clouds and various SLCs, but being night time, we couldn't tell if anything was rotating.

We did see a funnel rope out west of Lake View, IA, but it was brief and I'm not sure if it was supercellular in nature.

It definitely wasn't a fun drive home, as we had large cone shaped cloud with strong inflow to our west when we were on 35 southwest of Dow. As we proceeded north and the winds switched to outflow, we had to pull over for the first time that I can recall because of rain and wind. There was a rolled semi, and the antenna on the trunk, which has never come of due to wind, was knocked off. The car rocked hard enough that we felt that we felt the need to point it into the wind.
