There were several reports of funnel clouds (I think WCNC has some on their website) around the NC area today as several supercells affected the western portion of the state. I missed out on a lot of the early action, but was able to chase a supercell that was tornado warned. The supercell crossed southern Catawba County and headed into Statesville and toward Winston-Salem...unfortunately, I couldn't catch it in time. However, behind it, there was another supercell that had been tornado and was going to pass just south of Winston-Salem toward Lexington. On radar, it looked pretty wimpy...not a lot of precip with it, but it was rotating aloft. So after heading several miles south, I came out of the precip core and came onto this! In all of my life of chasing in North Carolina, I have never seen such an amazing rotating wall cloud! Seemed like something you'd see out in the Midwest! It was very smooth and had striations (camera didn't pick up very well on them) across it...because it was so big, I wasn't able to get the whole thing in one shot on my camera. At the base, it looked like a funnel was trying to form, but it dissipated pretty quickly. The storm moved on pretty quickly and I wasn't able to keep up with it, but I think it fell apart soon after.

Now, I know most of you have probably seen bigger and better wall clouds :p But by North Carolina standards, I think this is pretty sweet!

Dan, very nice storm pics! I was also chasing yesterday and targeted an area of higher instability just south of the boundary in Se Virginia. South of Wakefield. Multiple storms developed and moved northward but the storms would die as I approached them even before they reached the boundary. Better dynamics were approaching central Virginia from the southwest but darkness arrived and I called off the chase. I later watched a tornado warned storm approach Richmond, Virginia on radar from my home at about 10:45 PM. It lost organization before reaching the city.
Overall, a very lame chase. I saw rain.
