5/31/10 NOW: CO

Lou Ruh - rapidly rotating cone funnel about half way to the ground - amazing structure on the Prichet storm!

:edit: tornado - debris is visible under the cone funnel.

A day like this is why I love GR software and Level 2 data. Of all of the following, I can't see any of it on GR3, but I can see all of it on GR2:

there are multiple boundaries showing up on 0.5 deg. BR from KPUX. There is a NWWD propagating outflow boundary from the current storm, another boundary sort of riding along I-25 southeast of Walsenburg which curls to the east and almost parallels just south of State Highway 10, and a third boundary oriented WNW-ESE that seems to be feeding into the storm (quite likely providing the vorticity needed to get tornadogenesis despite the poor environmental conditions for it). The general motion of the PBL is quite apparent on KPUX, as there are probably more boundaries near and north of Colorado Springs. Someone from the area will probably need to correct me, but I'm wondering if the DCVZ is visible on KPUX right now as a boundary and associated spin in the reflectivity field centered over I-25 just south of Castle Rock. There also appears to be another area of reflectivity swirl just about right over Colorado Springs. Truly impressive stuff!

What a classic Baca county event. Boundary, isold sup. I saw an overshooting top on this baby as early as noon today. Storm created much of its own shear. The NAM & WRF totally pegged it too. Looks like some power poles down in Las Animas/Baca--and a few broken windshields, no other damage reported so far.

Just saw more dust/debris on M Phelps stream (chasertv.com)--two funnels under the wall cloud--impressive stuff!

Just watched an awesome rope tornado turn into a cone on Mike Phelps stream. It was on the ground for 5 minutes before he turned. Still on the ground now. It is weak, but beautiful none the less.
This is a classic example of if its May, chase. No matter what you get out in the field when its May

edit. that tornado doesn't look so weak any more. Probably EF1-2 by going off the video. Don't give me the damage rant, I know.

Not the wedge tornado being mentioned on TWC by on-air experts...but more of a classic SE Colorado type tornado...100-200y. wide. Nice catch for those on it.

I may be off by a minute or two, but it looks like it was on the ground for 15 minutes before Phelps lost sight of it. It looks like it was weakening when he lost sight of it though. That was definitely a respectable tornado.
If that doesn't convince you that should should always chase in May then I don't know what will.

The Weather Channel giving nice commentary and showing some wild close video of the tornado crossing the road. A nice slow moving easily visible storm. Talked with Jason Persoff who is chasing with Robert Balogh and watched an amazing corkscrewing updraft and tornado for over 20 minutes in Baca county. The storm still looks good and they are repositioning. I'm also drooling in OKC as I prepare to fly out tomorrow. I figured Colorado was a bit far to chase and get back to OKC safely. Congratulations to those on this impressive storm.

It's still on the ground! Unbelieveable.

Bryan

Edit: it just roped out...8:06pm CDT...approx 9-10 miles NE of Boise City.

Looks like another funnel or tornado on Charles Edwards' stream. Man, this storm just keeps going! Very impressive. BV shows a pretty broad, but reasonably strong couplet with gate-to-gate in there.
