5/27/2010 REPORTS: MD/PA
Mark Ellinwood and myself took a drive north & east toward northeast Maryland and southeastern Pennsylvania for some action there. It was a tough forecast (for me) mostly because of lack of time to watch models and do the required views of the conditions. However, it was apparent that north & east was the only option from homebase. In the end, it was only the time restriction (both Mark and I had to be back home by 9pm) that made us miss better storms. We did see storms including my favorite….initiation. I even recorded a short time lapse of the initiation. Here is a picture from that timeframe:
We hit our cut-off time and missed the better storm just to our northeast…which we did see at a distance, but didn’t have time to chase. Mark and I returned to Gaithersburg, MD by 8:30pm a tad earlier than necessary (which was a good thing).
Later, after I took care of my business obligations, I saw the second round (1st round here in the homebase county) and headed out shortly after midnight. I was working on the pictures from earlier when I noticed the radar just explode. I headed out hoping to stay ahead of the line, but I ended up with some technical difficulties and the radar loop got way delayed. It was no big deal, I pretty much knew what was going on. I drove to eastern Rockville/Sandy Spring area, but then reversed course to intercept a different line. I did so around the Laytonsville area where I took the following images:

A shot I didn't post on my blog:
That's Mark watching new convection appear to our north and east.
Note to Mod.: I can't remember, but I thought I remember revision to the rules about report threads. Generally there is to be one and only one thread per day, but I thought I read somewhere they can be separate if two different systems separated by a large distance or something to that affect can allow for more than one thread. If I'm wrong, my apologies and just merge it with the MT thread.
