5/24/10 REPORTS: ND/SD/NE/KS/OK/TX

Chased here in the TX Panhandle today. After storms fired early around 1:30 pm, got really stressed and disapointed cause of the lack of storms. I totally figured it was a bust day...Headed home from bryans corner and noticed a few cells going up to the east of Gruver and decided and asked myself, "whats the worst that could happen?" ha, and boy i was wrong!! Got the Tornadoes to the north of Spearman, Caught 4 different tornadoes!!! 2 Tornadoes were really brief, another lasted 5 minutes, and the initial tornado lasted 13 minutes...

Congrats to those who scored big today! Great photos guys! I didn't nab any tornadoes today, but I still got some great photos ops. Started off near Pampa, TX and worked my way down to Lefors. Got south of town and had a great wall cloud develop and showed signs of rotation, but it never dropped a tornado. Fiddled up near Canadian, TX for a while and made the trek back home. On the way home, I decided to go south out of Pampa to catch a few photos ops of a storm at sunset. I wasn't disappointed at all. No tornadoes, but it was still a great day.

Wow - beautiful pictures everyone! We considered this a bust day for our team. We left Minneapolis late and rushed into SD, missing the early tornadoes in the northwest. We then sat in Pierre waiting for signs that anything was going to happen. Around 6pm we decided to head back since we were still tired from our 5/22 blitz. I don't think the Moderate risk necessarily verified, but it looks like there were some very photogenic scenes. We got pictures of a wall cloud, some towers with the sun setting behind them, and a rain shaft in a field.
 
I targeted North Platte, NE but left Kearney late and missed the early stuff north of there. Waited south of NP to see if the storms coming out of Kansas would do anything. Those cells quickly died so I ended up chasing the squall line later that evening. Experienced some strong straight line winds and got some good shots. An interesting day...

Started our day out in North Platte. Target for the day was Phillip,SD. Left what we thought would be a decent hour only to find out that storms were firing way early. We timed it to where we would be at our target around 330 ish. Attempted to catch the Faith,SD wedge only to disappointed. Simply should have left earlier. We also could have made it on the storm if we didn't have to wait for 20 mins on all the road construction. I will also say that trying to catch up to a 60mph moving storm isn't that fun. I do have a few shots of a shelf ahead of the line.

I think that was a problem for anyone that wasn't in position the night before. Storms fired really early and anyone that wanted to get in postion before initiation was screwed, then you had to play the road network game it was pretty tough. We tried to get near the triple point and play either the warm front or the dryline but the warmfront never was that active and the dryline had training cells all day, really the only thing that was decent was out ahead of the dryline and we weren't in position for that. Pretty weird setup i think the upper level southerly winds weren't that favorable and limited the overall setup.
 
Wanted to chase the warm front setup in SD. Night before I set my alarm clock for 5:30 a.m. Having 2 hours of sleep the night before and then being up kinda late trying to get video uploaded, I thought, eh 6:30 a.m. sounds better and should work for leaving eastern NE to get up there early. Like 7 hours to Rapid City. The more I looked at stuff on the way, the more I thought, nw SD just ain't going to happen....as in me get there soon enough.

I think I was west of Chamberlain when I heard the first warming for something to the north, said north at 75 mph. Was like, yeah, today is stupid. Kept at it anyway. Then stuff starts to fire right along I90 east of Rapid City....just west of me a bit. I watched them haul ass north. I presume those were what produced up there. So yeah, thank god I put that alarm clock back 1 extra hour the night before. Would have made all the difference in the world.

Wound up dropping south at Kadoka for NE tornado warnings. Decently structured supercell was seen at Mission. Then toyed with the line stuff at Ainsworth, then raced back home. A wasted 840 miles.

Great job to all those that bagged. Sure would have loved to done back to back chases in SD with wedges. I should have just stayed up there after the 22nd instead of driving back home and then back.
 
Spent Sunday night in Mccook, NE and was planning on just shooting up highway 83 to Murdo, SD and then heading west. Monday morning I decided I would hang back in Nebraska in hopes of slightly better storm motions. After I got to North Platte I decided I would keep going north of 83 to Thedford and look over data. Then I saw the MD for western NE and decided to go for that. I wasn't more than 30 minutes late for the tors out there. I was on my way out there before storms even really started to fire, but the motions were still 50-60 mph that far south which is what caused me to missed them. Got on the tor warned storm a little later north of Alliance, NE. Admittedly got a little too close to the circulation. Had to come to a complete stop while in the hook because I couldn't see the road in front of me thanks to all the rain. Finally got east of it and stayed on it until Hays Spring, NE. Watched a wall cloud for a few minutes, then had to grab gas and that caused me to get behind it. I think everything started to line out after that anyways. Followed the line east until sunset, measured wind gusts of 87 and 66 mph. Felt pretty cool almost getting blown over by the wind while standing there measuring it.

The sh*t I had just gotten out of north of Alliance, NE. Had to come to a complete freakin stop because I could not see a damn thing while in it:

Overall a pretty frustrating day, but I suppose that was to be expected.
 
Yeah, me and Steve were the only chasers on that storm. This has to be one of the best chases I've been on. Thanks Steve for leading me out to Spearman at the last minute to catch these amazing tornadoes!
