5/14/10 NOW: TX, NM

Storms have been in progress since early this morning, but things are heating up, especially in SW TX. I've been watching a storm from KMAF that appears to be trying to go supercellular. The stationary front is clearly visible on BR and this particular storm seems to be anchored to it and also seems to be turning right pretty hard here. A few of the latest volume scans have shown some broad/weak rotation.

(I know there exists severe potential across several areas of the country today, so I can see multiple NOW threads going up for today.)

Multiple supercells now developing in a narrow band just north of the boundary from just east of Midland/Odessa west through southern Lea County in NM. Pretty good couplet on the storm in southwest Lea County on GR2.

I talked to one of the VORTEX members and they saw a couple of tornadoes with the first tornado warned supercell in Ector Co. Most of these cell are now too far north of the boundary but more development further west and southwest.

Hail-Producing Tornado???

The tornado warning for Sterling County, Texas has a rather amusing choice of words:

AT 333 PM CDT...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR CONTINUED TO INDICATE A TORNADO CAPABLE OF PRODUCING QUARTER SIZE HAIL.

Hmm...that's a new one--don't recall ever having seen or heard of a tornado that produces hail. Wonder if they got the wording mixed up, between a thunderstorm capable of producing hail and a thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado?

Looks like the storms are in a pretty well-sheared environment, so will be interesting to see if they wind up producing much in the way of tornadoes.

TWC just said now that V2 did not have any tornado play today, just a lot of rain.

We chased some of these storms, I don't think I've ever seen so much rain in my life.

Edit. okay I stand corrected, there were a couple tornadoes in Ector Co.today... ouch :-( Curious as to why TWC said V2 didn't get them though.... ?
