5/10/10 REPORTS: OK/KS/TX

We intercepted the Wakita/Medford Supercell along US 81. First we witnessed the enormous mesocyclone with what appeared to be multiple tornadoes/vortices possibly becoming a "wedge" to our west. Haven't seen the survey for it yet to know for sure, though.

Then, we witnessed another brief wall cloud/ spin up along the trailing gust front.

After this passed we quickly went over towards Burbank to catch the storm that developed to the south. We witnessed a well defined wall cloud and at least one funnel.

5-10-10 Yukon Oklahoma Tornado

Here are 4 screen captures from the west Yukon tornado. It was on the ground 6 1/2 minutes over I-40. It was about the most snakey tornado I have seen in years. It lifted and went northeast about 5 miles only to recycle and produce a funnel over the Quail Springs mall area...It was on the ground several times with a white debris cloud sometimes after the last few hundred yards of the tornado went transparent...I was doing live TV with Gary England on I-40 with a ton of folks who locked up I -40...Folks who line up under an overpass blocking all lanes, preventing forward movement and escape from a storm need a public flogging...uggggg .

Here's a link to the video I shot of the Wakita storm. This shows the tornado just before and during its multivortex stage. At this point, the main circulation appears to be moving back south across SR 11 and over the line of chasers moving east.

I took this footage from just north of the intersection of SR 11 and Trenton Road. The tree line is about one mile away, and I'm looking due west here.

Wason the El Reno sideways tornado until the storm left me in its dust. Jeremy & Brandon were able to pick up whereI got left off however and track very close to the Little Axe tornado. Power flashes debris. Typical Jeremy Wilson chase...:-p
Finally Ben Jacobi got some nice structure shots on the cell further South near Waurika with a water spout in the area over the lake.

Ben Site http://photographybybenjacobi.blogspot.com/ he also has some good star & structure with lightning near Crowell on 16th around midnight

Moore-Harrah, Oklahoma EF4 Killer Tornado

2010 May 10 Moore-Harrah, Oklahoma Tornado - YouTube video clip (direct link)

The initial dryline storms across westcentral and southwest OK took their time organizing into supercells. 0-6km shear vector orientation perpendicular to the lifting mechanism (dryline) led to multiple, stringy updrafts during the first 90-120 minutes of their lifetimes. However, I knew once the storms moved further east towards the NNE-SSW oriented boundary associated with the western edge of the eroding stratus, that the storms would quickly transition into tornadic supercells. Visible satellite images and KTLX 88D loops indicated this boundary was just west of I-35 across central OK.

I thought the tornado would occur over south OKC or Moore, so RJ Evans, Scott Fitzgerald, and I raced east on I-240 to get ahead of the storm, but ran into the baseball and larger hail and a traffic jam. I thought storm motion would be ENE, but it was actually due east. Kudos to WFO Norman which recognized what was going to happen and issued multiple preemptive tornado warnings before these storms crossed over the boundary.
