4/11/08 NOW: MS, AL, TN, KY

Tornado reported by the public traveling through Giles, Lawrence and Marshall Counties, TN. Fayette, Winston and Walker Counties in AL are under a warning as well as Cumberland and Monroe Counties in KY. Storm motions are between 40 and 60 mph with the KY storms moving the fastest at the moment.

I've been monitoring some of the central AL storms which have shown weak rotation but failed to develop so far.

A possible tornado was reported in Wayne County, KY by WLEX 18 TV earlier. I don't think that has been confirmed yet, although numerous reports of funnels associated with that supercell were reported as it worked its way across SC KY.

Right now the focus seems to be on middle TN and NRN AL. NRN AL is blanketed in numerous supercells as we speak. Some of them are displaying very large hail signatures. And I am particularly interested in the cell SE of Huntsville that is out there all by itself.

I just heard an update from WTVQ-TV in Lexington, KY that there have been quite a few damage reports coming in from Clay County, KY, where this most recent tornado warned storm was just located. There are reports of KY HWY 11 N of Manchester being "blocked by a house and a barn". There is a seperate report of a mobile home being shredded and strewn about. There was a very impressive hook siganture on this storm as it moved across this area.

This is taking place only about 5-10 miles from where I live. I'm going to flip on my police scanner and listen to the SKYWARN frequency and police to see what I can hear.

Huntsville seems to have dodged a few bullets. I was able to catch the back end of the tor-warned cell that crossed US231 at Meridianville and got low contrast video of a nice bowl-shaped lowering. It went from a blob to a small severe storm in a very short time. Then I rode out the HP that came through Decatur and Huntsville--strong outflow (estimated 65mph), heavy precip.

Just got back home and checked the radar, confirming that the hook location was where I was shooting.

Still have significant cells south of HSV. And a new batch of small cells is hatching due west of town with td's still in mid-60s, but I don't know if the previous cells trashed the atmosphere sufficiently to prevent severe development.

I'm still trying to figure out why the Peachtree City, GA FO didn't continue the tor warning for the Rome area as the tornadic supercell moved into the area (where it currently is.) Velocity per FFC 88D still looks well within range for a tornado warning. It was just in the last 15 minutes that a tornado was REPORTED with the same storm per the Birmingham FO. I can make out inbound, outbound, and no radial velocity all next to each other and this is at a fairly low elevation given that FFC isn't too far away.
