Connor McCrorey, Bridget Geaughan, and myself observed a supercell/likely tornado near Roby, TX. After blowing the forecast, I finally wised-up and jetted south towards the developing CAPE bullseye. Not long after we left, the storm rapidly developed. After what seemed like an eternity, we finally got position and set up just south of Anson, TX to watch the storm. Around 6:55pm, we observed a large funnel that appeared to be over halfway down, within an area of enhanced rotation. Later on we would learn chasers Aaron Dooley and Alec Jones reported a brief tornado in this area at the same time.
The storm eventually split, with the right-mover heading south towards I-20. We moved south to 20, then headed west. We stopped at TX126, and setup just north of the interstate. Aaron and Alec pulled up from the other direction, having been closer to the storm. We sat and watched many suspicious lowerings, but nothing we could confirm as significant rotation before dark. After dark, we continued west a mile or so, then pulled off again to watch a very-consistent lowered area. Randy Denzer pulled up, and we all sat watching through the darkness trying to make out the feature. There were several times we thought it might be a tornado, but after extensive video reviews, we concluded the possible after-dark tornado was just scud....but a very convincing piece of scud.
