I witnessed the St. Louis supercell on Saturday. I was stuck at work today and unable to call off, but the storm of the day did me a favor and came to me. My short 'chase' of about 10 miles during my lunch break netted some great hail. I have five of these in my freezer now.

I avoided the hail and stayed a step ahead of the storm down I-64 from the St. Louis area to Nashville, IL. Wasn't easy with the storm moving 40-45 mph through the metro area then right down I-64. Caught a likely funnel over Caseyville, IL literally in my rear view mirror with the storm a mile or two behind me; after that some decent structure at times as the storm pounded various locations with baseball and larger (up to 4.5") hail.

Looking northwest from Mid-America Airport as the storm dropped up to 3.5" hail in O'Fallon, IL

I intercepted the first cell in Collinsville. I had planNed to sit under 255 on horseshoe lake rd. While observing the hail core drop golf balls, the tornado sirens sounded so I punched the core on 64 and followed the storm to mid America airport where tennis ball sized hail pelted my Jeep. Decided to run south to 15 and ruin with the cell as it moved towards Nashville. Saw a nice shelf and wall cloud.

John, I was the one that stoppEd and chatted with you for a minute. I was in the white cherokee. Out was cool to meet another forum member even if we didn't know it at the time. I also remember hearing you speak several times while I was a geography student at SIUE. Had no idea you were a chaser. I never chased while there, but took all the met classes I could.

Saw some of the most amazing lightning of my life and a brief tornado on the storm down by Aspermont, TX. It was barely moving, and David Drummond and I were able to sit on the SE side and enjoy it for over 30 minutes from the same spot. A brief tornado spun up as well, which took us both somewhat by surprise.

Full recap is here http://www.benholcomb.com/Chase-Accounts/20120428

Here's a picture of the tornado. David Drummond got a better picture, and Niccolò Ubalducci got an even better one.
